38 DAYS
It is noon on 20 May. A raging sun beats down on the niches of the municipal cemetery of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelona). In the lower rows of one of the walls, space is prepared to receive, after a long wait, the ashes of Juana Terrés. 38 days have passed since her death, at the age of 92, in a care home in Sabadell. She is one of the more than 19,000 people who died from coronavirus or similar symptoms in care homes in Spain.
Juana's death occurred on 12 April, during the toughest lockdown period of the pandemic. Almost six weeks have passed and Spain is still in a State of Alarm, but the so-called de-escalation plan is moving forward - at different speeds - throughout the country.
