Private Story
NEW YEAR'S EVE
During the last hours of 31 December 2018, some 200 people, mostly from Honduras, were wandering outside Tijuana, next to the wall that separates Mexico from the United States, looking for an opportunity to cross the border. Among them, many young people and several families. None knew what to do and all were afraid of what might happen if they tried to jump over the border wall.
After midnight, in the early hours of 2019, when everyone was hiding close to the wall, enduring the bitter cold, and with the hope of eluding agents from the United States border, police who had already detected them hours before using their thermal cameras and night vision goggles—a tear gas canister fell into Mexican territory. It was the first of many that US agents fired into Mexico.
The result was another thwarted attempt to cross the border, of leaving the transit area. Another thwarted attempt to move forward, to break with the weariness of a wait that no one wanted.
