Kibera ~ A changing Community*
Located only 6 miles away from one of Africa's biggest cities, Kibera has over the past experienced a calm existence from disturbances caused by developments happening across other parts of the country. A huge government project on relocations was all that was to better the housing of this community, though, the first relocated residents did complain. The lack of civic engagement when the government was building the relocation houses since it did not fit their communal culture of togetherness especially among the Nubian community.
In 2020, the government started the construction of two main roads and a national wide expansion of land next to the railway tracks both cutting across Kibera slums. These projects while continuing to enhance the value of the space this community is located. the resulting displacements are becoming a major social issue especially to communities that have lived here centuries ago.
This long-term photo project looks to highlight the plight of families who are facing the perils of lack of government civic participation, human rights abuse, a changing community, and how this community is headed beyond the active perils of the Coronavirus pandemic. It looks at the role the community leaders and those in the position of power are doing to shape the future of a place they've called home for a long time.
