Over the past few months, amidst a pandemic, cases of social injustices due to displacements have been on the rise. On the morning of May 4th, 2020, families living in the Sewage Area of Kariobangi in Nairobi got evicted from their homes. Kenyan authorities forcibly evicted more than 5,000 people defying a court order and leaving many families stranded and homeless amidst a pandemic. With rising cases of coronavirus and looming lockdowns, these families could only manage to stay out in the cold or seek shelter from friends. Their properties were taken from them during the demolitions. With the ongoing heavy rains and the COVID-19 pandemic, there are concerns of a humanitarian crisis if those displaced are not given alternatives. Reasons for the evictions: The government acquired a 20 billion loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the French Development Bank for the implementation of Sewerage projects in Nairobi. This photo series explore their current plight in search of a balanced life and the toll the evictions had on them.
