Daniel Owino Okoth, also known by his artist name, Futwax, poses for a photo in a space cleared for railway tracks side expansion in Kibera. The families living here were displaced without compensation despite being here decades. Kibera is undergoing major infrastructural changes with a lot of demolitions, displacements, and movements. I'm always amazed by the visual canvas this place provides and the changes happening here.

A field showing Kariobangi North Sewerage settlement and surrounding areas where authorities used excavators to demolish homes, churches, shops, and schools, and destroyed personal belongings. The destruction left about 600 households—affecting at least 7,000 people including children—without housing and at increased risk of exposure to Covid-19.

Issak Abdi Adan and his family is part of the community that was evicted in the Sewage Area of Kariobangi in the morning of May 4th, 2020. He has been living in the area for 26 years. He was the chairman of the Kariobangi Sewage Farmers Self-Help Group. Despite a court order barring the eviction and in the midst of a pandemic, Adan and his family had no time to prepare when they woke up to a demolition.

Nairobi and its surroundings are undergoing major infrastructural changes. from railway expansions to newer roads. Currently, Kibera is one of the community that is greatly affected by changes happening. One of the main factors causing this is its close proximity to Nairobi's main business center; the Nairobi Business District.
This projects explores the elements of a changing community and the decisive factors affecting the lives of the people involved. A special focus is the divisive elements of policies in housing system and access to social facilities in this uncertain times of the pandemic. Born in Kibera, the sense of place we use to have as young men growing up here has changed a lot mostly due to new structures and affordability.
