Game of clones
It all began as a crazy idea in 2006 when, during an important match, Adolfo Cambiaso's horse, Aiken Cura, broke down. It was then that Cambiaso came up with the idea of extracting skin stem cells in case cloning ever existed. Some years later, his idea became a reality. What started as an attempt to immortalize those champions has turned into a multi-million-dollar industry.
Kheiron Biotech's laboratory is like a movie set, corridors of white lights, sophisticated electronic equipment, flasks and containers with embryos, liquids and other elements to design the life of an elite horse. When the foal or filly is born, the owner arrives at the field with his trusted veterinarian to check that everything is in order, that the product complies with what was promised. Once the procedure is completed, they will leave with their replica, an animal with the DNA of a champion.
In the recent edition of the Argentine Polo Championship, at least 12 cloned horses competed.
