Deep in the forests and swamps of tropical Southeast Asia; The Malay Archipelago; 2:00 am.; Sukau, the Kinabatangan River, stale air, the Orang-Sungai; a poacher named Ebu; Ebu GoGo, folklore, mythical creatures; 34°C and 80% Humidity; 35mm, negatives ruined, moisture and mildew, Ilford; Irfan, fixer; a traditional parang with a wooden scabbard; Beware wild monkeys and jungle elephants, a calf and a bluff charge; scientific isolation; biological diversity in the jungle; a boar's head, Dyak Chief, propitiation, animal sacrifices; the land of river and palm; longhouse, rumah panai, sick with fever, chills, and abdominal cramps; voices, other sounds in the darkness in the night; the remote village of Abai; Orangutan; bushmeat, illegal trade; exotic birds, Abbott's Booby, hornbills; the last Sumatran rhino, Iman, extinction of a species; palm oil, orphaned primates; a land of twisted realism and feral predators of humans and animals.
