Private Story
West
On a crisp day in the fall of 2023, eager to get into the field again, I boarded a flight to Manitoba. Manitoba is the location of the 100th meridian, dividing Canada east and west, and was the perfect place to start this chapter.
Early in the first chapter, I decided to photograph in colour. It was not an easy decision, but in the end, I felt colour would add descriptive information and transparency - colour is how we see.
In Manitoba, a rental car packed with gear, I hit the road. The roads are long, straight, and flat, and the combines plow the fields in the fall. My route took me west on Trans Canada Highway #1, across prairie fields from Winnipeg to Brandon, Portage la Prairie, Virden, Lauder, and Lylton. I was interested in how these towns reflected the cultural landscape of the Canadian West and wanted to visit as many places as possible in my eight-day visit before flying back to my home in Ontario.
