Between 2009 and 2016 I spent time in Xinjiang, documenting Kashgar, Turpan, Ili and places in between, meeting Uighurs, Kazakhs and Han individuals across the autonomous region. In the time since, China has been denounced by the international community for razing sacred Uighur sites and imprisoning Uighurs in detention centers and prison camps. These photos offer a glimpse of an earlier Xinjiang.
