Well-known for his Siamese fighting fish photographs, professional photographer Visarute Angkatavanich from Bangkok, Thailand, spoke to me about his life, photography, inspirations etc. 

Thank you for sharing your story with me, Visarute. I am honoured to learn from and be inspired by another world-class creative photographer from Thailand.

Q1. Tell us about yourself and your background: who you are and what you do.

My name is Visarute Angkatavanich, and I am a 50-year-old Bangkok resident. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Communication Arts from Chulalongkorn University, majoring in advertising. I used to work in graphic design and advertising photography. I'm currently an advertising photographer.

ชื่อ วิศรุต อังคตวณิช ครับ เป็นคนกรุงเทพฯ อายุ 50 ปี เรียนจบ ป.ตรีที่ จากคณะนิเทศศาสตร์ สาขาวิชาการโฆษณา จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย ทำงานด้านกราฟิคดีไซน์มาก่อน ควบคู่กับงานถ่ายภาพโฆษณา ปัจจุบันเป็นช่างภาพโฆษณา

Q2. Where do you draw inspiration from? What does your work aim to say?

The work that many people know me for is fighting fish photography. It came from a childhood fondness for fish. I liked looking at fish, whether in the drawing picture books, at the market, or in the fish tanks in restaurants. As I got older, I liked fishing, diving, and going to aquariums; everything to do with fish attracted my attention.

When I was young, I grew up at my father's clinic. Therefore, no other pets were allowed except fish. I used to have goldfish, fighting fish, and guppy fish, but I didn't have any pet fish until ten years ago when I had the chance to visit a flea market. At the market, I saw a black-and-white goldfish with a panda pattern. I was surprised and impressed, so I bought it and tried to take pictures. After that, I liked the pictures I took. When I notice new generations of fighting fish with different colours and tail shapes from when I was a kid, I take photos of them.

In addition to liking fish, I also like art, such as drawing, painting, and sculptures, especially from the classical and neoclassical period in which stones were carved to look swaying and soft. I'm also interested in various dance performances, particularly ballets that my mother was interested in from a young age, and the Japanese culture, such as manga and anime. These things have inspired me in life. When I look at the fighting fish, I see various aspects of movement, fashion, textile-like texture, beautiful colours like in graphic design, and shapes that can be interpreted as either concrete or abstract.

Because fish photography stems from my fondness for seeing extraordinary images of fish, there is nothing specific my work aims to say. People can freely interpret my work in different ways. Therefore, my work can be treated as anything from academic to artistic to commercial. I see my work as a melody; there are no lyrics that tell a story, and it's more of a song to stir your emotions.

Q2. คุณได้แรงบันดาลใจจากที่ไหน? งานของคุณมีจุดมุ่งหมายที่จะสื่อว่าอะไร?

งานที่คนรู้จักเยอะๆ จะเป็นผลงานถ่ายปลากัด ที่มาก็มาจากความชื่นชอบในวัยเด็กที่มีต่อปลา เป็นคนที่ชอบดูปลา ดูหนังสือภาพปลา ดูปลาในตลาด ดูตู้ปลาตามร้านอาหาร พอโตขึ้น ก็ชอบตกปลา ดำน้ำ ไปเที่ยว aquarium อะไรที่มีปลา ก็จะดึงดูดให้สนใจ

ตอนเด็กๆ โตขึ้นมาจากคลีนิคของคุณพ่อ เลยไม่มีสัตว์เลี้ยงอื่นที่เลี้ยงได้ นอกจากปลา เคยเลี้ยงปลาทอง ปลากัด ปลาหางนกยูง แต่พอโตขึ้นก็ไม่ได้เลี้ยงอีกจนกระทั่ง 10 ปีก่อนได้มีโอกาสไปตลาดนัด ได้เห็นปลาทองสีขาวดำลายแพนด้า เลยรู้สึกแปลกใจและประทับใจ จึงซื้อมาเลี้ยงและลองถ่ายภาพ หลังจากนั้นก็รู้สึกชอบภาพที่ถ่ายมาก เมื่อมีโอกาสได้เห็นปลากัดยุคใหม่ ซึ่งมีสี ทรงหางที่แตกต่างไปจากสมัยเด็กๆ ที่เคยเห็น ก็เลยนำมาถ่ายภาพ

นอกจากความชอบในตัวปลา ยังชอบงานศิลปะทั้งวาดภาพ เพ้นท์ภาพ ชอบดูงานรูปปั้น โดยเฉพาะงานยุคคลาสิคและนีโอคลาสิค ซึ่งแกะหินให้มีความพริ้วไหว อ่อนนุ่ม นอกจากนั้นยังสนใจการแสดงการเต้นระบำต่างๆ โดยเฉพาะบัลเล่ต์ที่คุณแม่มีความสนใจตั้งแต่ยังเด็ก รวมไปถึงวัฒนธรรมญี่ปุ่น มังงะ อนิเมะ สิ่งเหล่านี้เป็นแรงบันดาลใจที่หลอมรวมขึ้นมาจากประสบการณ์ชีวิต เมื่อมองไปที่ปลากัด จึงเห็นแง่มุมต่างๆ ที่มีทั้งความเคลื่อนไหว พื้นผิวที่เหมือน fashion textile สีสันที่สวยงานเหมือนงานกราฟิคดีไซน์ รูปร่างรูปทรงที่เป็นได้ทั้งรูปธรรมและนามธรรม

เนื่องจากงานถ่ายปลา เกิดจากความชอบที่จะได้เห็นภาพที่แปลกตาของปลา ไม่ได้มีประเด็นอื่นๆ ในการสื่อสาร คนที่ดูงานจึงมีอิสระในการตีความไปในทางต่างๆ ผลงานผมจึงเป็นไปได้ตั้งแต่ภาพทางวิชาการ ภาพศิลปะ ภาพที่ใช้ในทาง commercial ส่วนตัวแล้วมองงานตัวเองเหมือนเพลงบรรเลงที่ไม่ได้มีเนื้อเพลงเป็นเนื้อหาเรื่องราว แต่เป็นเพลงที่มีไว้สำหรับอารมณ์ความรู้สึกมากกว่า

Q3. What is the most important element in your work?

The elements of my work are the fish, the use of shadows, and the fish's movement. The most difficult thing is imagining the pictures you want to take and directing the fish to swim, because they have different personalities. Perhaps the most significant investment is taking the time to shoot the photos. It can take many hours to several days at a time. The most challenging thing when you've been shooting the same subject (which isn't very complex, like fighting fish) for ten years is finding new perspectives different from the previous ones.

Q3. อะไรคือองค์ประกอบที่สำคัญที่สุดในงานของคุณ?

สิ่งที่เป็นองค์ประกอบของงานผม มีตัวปลา การใช้แสงเงา และการจับจังหวะของปลา สิ่งที่ยากคือการจินตนาการถึงภาพที่อยากถ่าย และการกำกับการว่ายน้ำของปลา เพราะปลาแต่ละตัวมีบุคคลิกที่ไม่เหมือนกัน บางทีสิ่งที่เป็นการลงทุนมากที่สุดคือการให้เวลาในการถ่ายภาพ ซึ่งถ่ายทีนึงก็หลายชั่วโมงจนถึงหลายๆ วันก็มี และสิ่งที่ยากที่สุดคือ เมื่อคุณถ่าย subject เดิมที่ไม่ได้ซับซ้อนอย่างปลากัดมา 10 ปี การจะหาแง่มุมใหม่ๆ ที่ต่างไปจากเดิม นี่คือเรื่องที่ยากที่สุด

Q4. Are there any suggestions you would like to give to anyone interested in what you do?

Photography is like expressing an idea – the photographer's feelings towards something. You can learn about me by looking at and observing my photos because the images portray me and reflect my personality. For example, I'm a fish lover, so I take pictures of fish. At first, it wasn't a trend. I didn't care whether other people liked them or not. I just kept taking photos as I wanted, and eventually, the photos became well-known and accepted and started trending. Other people started paying attention to and imitating my style. Before then, Thai people were not keen on fighting fish because they were considered 'Thai' (Thai people prefer foreign stuff). If I had to work with something that required other people's acceptance, it probably wouldn't be fish because fish don't appeal to the public. I would probably need to fly somewhere far away to take photos that would get people excited.

Therefore, if you like taking photos and want to be more than just an ordinary amateur photographer, be honest with your feelings. Don't do something just to please other people or to chase the latest trends. Be yourself and be original because today's world no longer wants to see only beautiful pictures. We want to see things that are extraordinary, different, and unique. You might be able to find everything on the internet, but what the world really needs is something that is not yet available online.

Q4. มีข้อคิดอะไรที่พอจะแนะนำให้กับคนที่สนใจในงานที่ทำอยู่

การถ่ายภาพเป็นเหมือนการบ่งบอกความคิด ความรู้สึกที่มีต่อสิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่ง ของช่างภาพ คุณจะรู้จักผม ก็ผ่านการมอง และสังเกตุภาพถ่ายของผม เพราะมันกำลังบอกถึงตัวตน สะท้อนความเป็นตัวผมออกมาจากภาพนั้น อย่างผมเป็นคนชอบปลา ก็ถ่ายภาพปลา ตอนแรกๆ ที่ถ่ายมันยังไม่ได้เป็นกระแสอะไร ถ่ายไปคนอื่นจะชอบไม่ชอบ ผมก็ไม่ได้สนใจ ก็ถ่ายไปเรื่อยๆ ตามที่ตัวเองชอบ จนกระทั่งภาพเริ่มเป็นที่รู้จัก เป็นที่ยอมรับ และกลายเป็นกระแส จนคนอื่นๆ เริ่มหันมาสนใจและถ่ายในสไตล์ผม ทั้งที่ก่อนหน้านั้น คนไทยเองก็ไม่ได้สนใจปลากัดอะไรมาก เพราะมองว่าเป็นของไทย (คนไทยนิยมของต่างชาติมากๆ) ถ้าผมเริ่มทำงานจากการที่ต้องทำให้คนอื่นยอมรับ คงไม่ได้ถ่ายปลาแน่ๆ เพราะมันดูไม่ได้น่าสนใจในสายตาคนทั่วไปเลย ก็คงจะบินไปถ่ายอะไรไกลๆ คนอื่นเห็นก็ตื่นเต้นได้ง่ายกว่า

ดังนั้น ถ้าคุณชอบถ่ายภาพ และอยากไปให้ไกลกว่านักถ่ายภาพสมัครเล่นทั่วไป จงซื่อสัตย์กับความรู้สึกของตัวเอง ไม่ใช่ทำมันเพราะคนอื่นชอบ หรือวิ่งตามสไตล์ที่กำลังเป็นที่นิยม จงเป็นตัวเอง เป็น original เพราะโลกยุคนี้ไม่ได้อยากเห็นภาพสวยดาดๆ อีกแล้ว แต่อยากเห็นสิ่งที่แปลก แตกต่าง และ unique คุณอาจจะหาทุกอย่างได้จาก internet แต่สิ่งที่โลกต้องการจริงๆ คือสิ่งที่ยังไม่มีใน internet

Q5. What can we expect from you in the future?

I want to keep photographing fish because every year or two, new fish are bred. There will be fish with new colours and patterns, and I can't wait to photograph them. Photography is an entertaining hobby and a challenging and creative task – and it soothes my soul.

Q5. เราคาดหวังอะไรจากคุณได้ในงานต่อไป

ผมยังอยากถ่ายปลาต่อไปเรื่อยๆ เพราะทุกๆ ปีหรือสองปี มักจะมีการ breed ปลาใหม่ๆ เกิดสีสัน ลวดลายใหม่ๆ ขึ้น และทำให้อดใจไม่ไหวที่อยากถ่ายภาพปลาเหล่านั้น สำหรับผมเอง งานถ่ายพวกนี้ เป็นทั้งความบันเทิง งานอดิเรก งานสร้างสรรค์ที่ท้าทาย และเป็นสิ่งหล่อเลี้ยงจิตใจ
