(In English and Thai)

Marine wildlife photography is not my main domain, but I am interested to know the ideas behind other talented and creative-minded people because I might want to apply their thoughts to my creative process.

It is such a privilege to speak to Nat Sumanatemeya, a talented underwater photographer from Thailand, whose pictures give us a narrative of what's happening to our oceans.

Q1. Tell us about yourself and your background: who you are and what you do.

I am Nat Sumanatemeya, a Bangkok native, born in 1970. I am a photographer who has been working on underwater photography and writing documentaries about the underwater world since 1993. While I was in my third year at the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication, Thammasat University, I had the opportunity to do an internship at TAT Magazine. At the time, TAT Magazine had just started introducing recreational diving, a relatively new form of tourism in Thailand and to the Thai people. After completing the internship, I had the opportunity to work on a film production crew, in keeping with my major in film studies, as an on-set photographer. I soon realised that working in film requires substantial labour that I found less suitable for me than photography and documentary writing. So, I shifted my focus to commercial photography and became a freelance photographer and writer for the editorial office of TAT Magazine in 1995. In 2000, Khun Dao Suwaunarungsi and I co-founded “Nature Explore” magazine. I am currently working as a photographer and videographer, with a primary focus on the underwater world of nature and animals. In addition, I have been co-running an outdoor clothing and equipment shop called Outdoor with friends for about ten years now.

Q2. Where do you draw inspiration from? What does your work aim to say?

My most important inspiration is probably my father, who loved and admired outdoor living 60-70 years ago, and passed that passion down to me. My father taught me to use a mask and snorkel while diving in the swimming pool when I was about seven. He introduced me to his world once he believed I could swim confidently and not drown. Almost weekly we drove to Pak Khlong Klaeng in Rayong to stay at his friend’s beach house and went out on a boat to go diving. During my childhood, I had the opportunity to observe how Thailand’s seas differ in various locations. I witnessed the first hotel ever at Ton Sai Bay on the Phi Phi Islands. I remember how deserted Koh Similan was. There was no National Park Office established and no tourist boats like today.

In the past 40 years of my life, I have witnessed the changes of the seas. Unfortunately, we cannot go back in time. Change is inevitable. These days, people often talk about the conservation of nature. Before we talk about conservation, however, people need to experience, recognise, and understand the true nature of our environment. Secluded forests and seas without a sign of human beings have become rare. It seems as though every beach and ocean are owned by somebody. If most people do not love and understand nature, there is no way we can stop its degradation.

Q3. What is the most important element in your work?

Nature is an essential element in my work. The phenomena of nature constantly happen on this planet. Being in the right place and time is not easy. Spending time waiting for the moment when nature reveals its magic to us is my work’s most crucial element.

I do not create something new. I only record the events happening in front of me, so those who may not have the chance to experience nature’s greatness can appreciate it.

Q4. Are there any suggestions you would like to give to anyone interested in what you do?

In conveying nature’s story, the first thing we have to appreciate is its greatness. Photography is only a tiny part of the composition. Your understanding and photography skills may help you capture that image nicely. Still, your anticipation, patience and determination will give you the chance to witness the wonders. I believe nature provides opportunity to those who understand it. The longer we work in nature, the smaller I feel. I do not know if my works can be called art. I do not care about this. I care about nothing else but the opportunity to be in nature. I know that this brings my true happiness.

Q5. What can we expect from you in the future? (What can we expect next from you?)

Maybe we should not expect too much, right? Working with nature for many years, I find the more we want, the nature tends to trick and test us. We will see things clearly when we take it easy and are open to whatever comes our way.

For my current work, I am working with six other friends under Deep VI Photography. We have created a coffee book with a collection of underwater photographs from many decades. Our book, entitled “The8th Continent”, can be ordered on Deep VI Photography Facebook fan page.

Q6. Where can we see your work? E.g. Facebook page, Instagram, website, etc.

Besides Deep VI Photography, I have a Facebook fan page called Nat Sumanatemeya. I have let it grow organically for over ten years; do not pay for Facebook’s feature posts or ads. As for my personal Facebook, I use it to talk nonsense with my friends. On Instagram, I rarely upload anything there because I’m too lazy. I do not have a website either. Sot it is best to look at my work on the fan page.
