Approximately 1,500 Central American migrants have been on a trip to the U.S. border since March 25, 2018. The march is known as Migrant Viacrucis and has been held since 2010 to draw attention to the importance of respect for the rights of Central American migrants.

The caravan departed from Tapachula, Chiapas, bordering Guatemala. 80% are Hondurans, the rest Guatemalans, Salvadorans and Nicaraguans.

The migrant Viacrucis was heading towards the Us border. Its president, Donald Trump, has strongly attacked irregular immigration and has put in place tough measures to drive migrants out of the country. On this occasion, he criticized the caravan and forced to stop it in Matías Romero, Oaxaca, adjoining the state of Veracruz.

Lying on a quilt that protects them from the cold, in the sports field of Matías Romero dozens of Central American families spend nights. Many are fleeing the violence of their countries, others still pursue the dream of a better future. In the mornings, the children have fun, in the afternoons their parents march to demand free transit. A dish of rice with beans is the recurring dinner they receive from volunteers, then under a palm tree rest.

"Mexico has the absolute power not to let these big 'caravans' of people enter their country," Donald Trump warned in a Twitter message.

"They must stop them, something they can do because their border laws work, so as not to allow them to move to our country, which has no effective border laws."

The Mexican government responded to Trump's words through a statement issued from the interior and foreign ministries. "The caravan known as Migrant Viacrucis is a public demonstration that seeks to draw attention to the migratory phenomenon and the importance of respect for the rights of Central American migrants."

Due to international pressure, the government of Mexico through the National Institute of Migration, yielded to the requests of the members of the caravan; Men and women, some accompanied by their children, received temporary visas so that they could safely move to the border and thus continue on their way.
