Awün: Cause misfortune
Mapudungun, Mapuche language.

The future of a region was altered during the first days of May 2016 in the southern part of the continent, specifically in the Los Lagos region, which comprises one of the largest islands of the Chilean Republic, Chiloe. Thousands of artisanal fishermen abandoned their nets due to the death of marine species, including mammals and birds.

The thesis of the sea workers was solid; the pouring of more than 4,500 tonnes of contaminated salmon into the sea by the fishing industry, however, the government authorities decided to blame the problem on a polar current resulting from the El Niño phenomenon and a unique red tide that did not had been registered for tens of years.

The men and women of the sea were united in one voice for more than 20 days. They took to the streets, blocked major transport routes in southern Chile, paralyzed the island of Chiloe, the country's tourist attraction, and forced the government of President Michelle Bachelet to grant them a monthly compensation bonus that reaches 300 chilean pesos ($495) over four months.

The barricades spread throughout the Los Lagos region and protests were radicalized in the main cities of the Andean country such as Santiago, Valparaiso, Puerto Montt and Temuco.

The lives of families will not be the same as before, a study by the environmental organization Greenpeace called the problem an environmental catastrophe that will last nearly 90 years.
Awün: Causar desgracia
Mapudungun, lengua mapuche.
