ABOUT MY WORK
MINORITIES: Any small group in society that is different from the rest because of their race, condition, religion, or political beliefs, or a person who belongs to such a group.
Four years ago I decided to focus my work on the investigation of the minorities; my first work was ‘Religious Minorities in Cuba’, the second one was ‘The Last Samaritans’ the third one was “ The Young Basque shepherd “ the fourth ‘Hidden Iran’ and finally the last one “ An oasis inside the pandemic “ . In many ways, I feel myself very close to the people who don’t follow unfairly imposed rules. It is my will to give a voice and visibility to the ones that need them, utilising photography as tool.
I can really relate to Anja when it comes to the need to tell stories from the heart on camera. As a freelance photographer, I'm always traveling alone, which wasn't always easy. In Iran, due to the difficult situation that the LGBT community faces for example, it was more difficult to find people that actually wanted to tell me their story. I'm always respectful of the subjects that I photograph. They were the ones that decided whether to show their face or hide it. The aesthetics made up of lights and shadows reflect the advantages and disadvantages of being different, the pros and the cons.
My work really touches me. I learn a lot from the main characters in my projects who are still my friends to this day. I will keep working with minority groups to see how they interact with their surroundings, to highlight what is different, to show that we live in a plural society and to break away from the imposed stereotypes.
