Portrait of Narciso Baque (60) as he leaves his community of Machalilla, province of Manabi, to go fishing. After almost 50 years in the trade, he recognizes that the challenges fishermen face currently force them to look for all kinds of ways to maintain a minimum economic income in order to survive
Being an artisanal fisher in Ecuador is hard. Fish are moving farther away from the coasts. Drug trafficking and illegal shark fishing are presenting themselves as more profitable alternatives. We went to the shores and offshore of the Ecuadorian coast, specifically in the province of Manabí.
