Private Story
Miriam Watsemba | Postponed Dreams
Honourable Mention
Postponed Dreams delves into the lived experiences of teenage girls who endured unplanned pregnancies during the COVID-19 lockdown in Northern Uganda. The project came as a response to national media coverage and public concern about the escalating number of teenage pregnancies throughout the country.
In the Lango subregion alone, 13,192 teenage pregnancies were registered in 2020. By September 2021, Lango had registered 25,812 teenage pregnancies. Currently, there are no statistics to show how many cases were recorded countrywide by the end of 2021.
‘Postponed Dreams’, labours to bring the voices and experiences of the girls behind these statistics to the forefront of the conversation on teenage pregnancies and child marriages. It focuses a light on the very experience of conceiving, carrying and raising an unplanned child, by a child.
