Randy Baillargeon washes blood from his hands with snow while dressing a caribou on the tundra. Bathurst caribou is off-limits in the Northwest Territories due to declining populations, but healthier herds outside of restricted hunting zones are fair game. Dene harvesters are encouraged to hunt caribou and bring much needed meat back to their communities as long as proper protocol and and laws are respected. Randy, an experienced hunter, often helps other younger hunters.
