Coca Cola & Pepsi SeriesPhotographs by Monica Silva
“The emotions are sometimes so strong that I work without knowing it. The strokes come like speech.”
Vincent Van Gogh
"Monica Silva uses the language of pop and visual advertising imaging as a reassuring chromatic/formal device, which pleases the distracted eye, for whom her work can be likened to the exuberance of David LaChapelle, and she presumably does so to open up, I believe consciously, a kind of overlook on the contemplation of what her photographs really contains, and which is mostly invisible to the eyes. Monica's language is an extremely personal form of magical realism."
Like the entire Pop Art strand, "Coca-Cola Series"..... is an entertaining homage to Warhol's aesthetic, "Coca Cola Series Pop Art": a play on the icon and the brand that disrupts the division between the sections of the exhibition. These are in fact compositional and thematic variations that stay clear of the decontextualization of the product on which Pop Art's historicized reflection is based."
