Location: Virtual Remote

Instructor: Lauri Lyons
Register: $246.00

Date Start: Tuesday, November 10, 2020
Date End: Tuesday, December 8, 2020
Time: 7:30-10:30 p.m. (Eastern Time)

In this course students will examine how media arts has been used to portray and influence American social justice movements, issues around cultural diversity, and economics of the media industry. Through discussion and presentations by guest speakers, the class will explore protest narratives, including Black Lives Matter, the Vietnam War protests, and the Civil Rights movement.

Discussions will also address and investigate issues around representation and cultural diversity in pop culture, as well as the media’s impact on our psychology through the promotion of stereotypes and the 24-hour news cycle. Finally, the class will investigate equality and inequality within the media industry, both on the employee and economic side.

Between class meetings students will view historical and contemporary films, photography, videos, social media, and artist interviews, which will then lead into the discussion topic during class. This course will provide a historical and cultural context for a critical understanding of today’s media landscape.

Open to students 18 and above. View complete policies. In this remote class, students will participate in live group discussions via Zoom. All assigned materials will be discussed during the live class session. Short videos and presentations will be viewed in class, and full length films and interviews will be viewed outside of class time.
