Navahine v. Hawai‘i DOT Climate Suite
Summary
Fourteen young people in Hawai‘i are suing the state Department of Transportation for violating their constitutional rights to a healthy and sustainable environment alleging that the DOT's policies favor carbon-powered transportation in the face of widespread evidence that burning carbon fuels has caused global warming and increases the already substantial threat young people face in the future as a consequence.
I'm also reporting on the suit filed by Our Children's Trust and EarthJustice on behalf of 14 young people suing the Hawai‘i State DOT for violating their constitutional rights to a sustaining, healthy environment. This will be the 2nd such suit to go to trial after Held v. Montana, beginning 06/12/23. These suits intend to set national precedents and force adults in power; whether elected, bureaucratic, or economic, set policy accounting for long-term sustainability and children's futures rather than near-term goals that don't align with the urgency the world of science is trumpeting when it comes to global warming's procession and national response to it.
