J. Matt is a documentary photographer and feature-writer in Honolulu whose stories (mostly) focus on global warming and its intersections with place and social, political, and economic histories. These stories include deeply-researched/reported writing accompanied by photographs in both color and black-and-white. Raised in Honolulu, they have a strong connection to the near-shore waters and mountains of O‘ahu and this connection has informed their point-of-view reporting on the consequential urgency of global warming—concentrating on Hawai‘i and California as exemplary of what the wider developed world faces.

I’m happy to take on assignment work and continue to pursue personally-driven projects, especially when they get picked up! I meet deadlines and have been told that I’m a pleasure to work with by at least several editors. I’m a more than capable photo editor who loves sequencing images, reasonable prose editor, and writer who looks under rocks for the story.

Willing to travel—experienced backpacker/zero-budget surf traveler; absolutely not a first-class baby. (I enjoy bathing but am able to skip them, thatʻs all I'm saying; on any given day my hair probably needs washing the salt out.) I never complain about extra legroom though!

Zuma Press Inc. represented; Society of Environmental Journalists & NPPA member

*A note about the ‘okina (inverted apostrophe indicating a glottal stop, and consonant in the Hawaiian language) and kahakō (macron indicating accent) use here—there is a clear absence of both in my captioning. Captions are pulled from metadata created to be hosted on the news wire where the Hawaiian language becomes unsearchable using either. I endeavor to use both correctly in any writing which is not carried on the wire.
