In France, in a context of growing tensions between the police and the population, the Secretary of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, has pushed the "Global Security" bill through an accelerated procedure (17 to 20 November 2020). The bill includes a prohibition on broadcasting images of the police. Gerald Darmanin argue that the prohibition should protect the police from online violence while the other party argue that the bill will prevent the police to be prosecuted when committing acts of violence.
Controversial and considered liberticidal, this bill triggered several demonstrations between November and December at the initiative of journalists' unions and human rights associations. Violent clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement officials broke out at each demonstration. Police and demonstrators blame each other for the violence.
