El Genocidio del Pueblo Yazidí: Ethel Bonet
www.ethelbonet.com

The Yazidi people are an ethno-religious minority group that has been persecuted for centuries. They are often accused of being devil worshippers, infidels, and unclean. This ignorance and fear have led to a long history of harassment, forced conversions, and genocide.

The Yazidi people have survived 74 genocides, of which 60 were perpetrated by Muslims. The first campaign of Islamization of the Kurds —of the Yazidi religion— took place under the rule of Caliph Omar Ibn al-Khattab (634-644). So much Yazidi blood was spilled that, to this day, the term Sorka Alem (red world) is used to describe this stage.

The last genocide was carried out by the self-styled Islamic State in the 21st century. ISIS militants killed thousands of Yazidis, enslaved thousands more, and forced many to flee their homes. The Yazidi community is still recovering from this genocide, and many Yazidis are still missing.

The political rivalries between the Kurdish regional government and the Iraqi national government have prevented the establishment of legal initiatives for the international recognition of the crimes committed by Daesh against the Yazidi community as an act of genocide. However, the Yazidi people continue to fight for justice and recognition. They are determined to rebuild their community and preserve their culture.
