Elizabeth Cheng Krist was a Senior Photo Editor with
National Geographic magazine for over 20 years. Before that, she worked at
Fortune magazine and at
Asia magazine. She has also produced stories for Magnum Photos and for the travel quarterly
Smithsonian Journeys. For the last ten years, she has helped to program the speakers for the National Geographic Photography Seminar. Elizabeth often travels to teach at workshops.
National Geographic‘s
Women of Vision exhibition, which Elizabeth curated, traveled to 10 museums. She also edited the
Women of Vision book, and the book
Pope Francis and the Vatican. She once curated an online auction for Christie‘s. Elizabeth is currently working on a National Geographic book and exhibition on China.
Honors include awards from Pictures of the Year International, the Overseas Press Club, and
Communication Arts. Elizabeth has reviewed portfolios at events sponsored by
The New York Times, PhotoPlus, Blink, and the Palm Springs Photo Festival.
Elizabeth has taught for the International Center of Photography, the Newhouse School at Syracuse University, CUNY, Santa Fe Workshops, The Kalish, Mountain Workshops, and La Luz. She has juried competitions for The Fence, Pictures of the Year International, Getty Instagram, the Philip Jones Griffiths Foundation, and the RFK Journalism Awards.
With photographer Lynn Johnson, Elizabeth organized the first Women Focus event at the Newseum in Washington D.C. in conjunction with the 75th anniversary of Pictures of the Year International. She advises the Eddie Adams Workshop and is on the board of Women Photograph.
Elizabeth is based in metropolitan New York (i.e., New Jersey, the sixth borough!).
