When I was a student in art college in Dublin I used to march in protests for the reproductive rights of Ireland women. I moved to New York City after college where I worked as a contract photographer with The New York Times from 7 years. I returned to Ireland as a photojournalist and I now photograph the protests I used march in.
In May 2018 Ireland voted by a landslide majority to repeal a near-total ban on abortion, an extraordinary victory for women’s rights that confirms the country’s transformation from a bastion of religious conservatism to one of Europe’s most liberal democracies.
This story focuses on the national mood in Ireland and the emerging divisions as the country prepared for the long awaited referendum on the legalisation of abortion.
