Kitchen Tales - le Cucine del Treno
Ever since I was a child, I've always heard about the 'Barca' neighborhood, in my hometown Bologna, as an area to avoid. The prejudice was due to the presence of many public housing complexes, inhabited by immigrant families from all over the world and from different Italian regions.
In documenting the culinary traditions of diverse communities within this vibrant neighborhood, I aim to showcase how the act of cooking and sharing meals provides a sense of comfort and familiarity in unfamiliar surroundings and foreign lands. Here, a melting pot of cultures converges, with families hailing from various countries and cities, and despite its reputation for being a less secure area, this area stands as a beacon of hospitality, offering a warm embrace to countless families seeking a new life and opportunities. Through this photographic series these kitchens, often underestimated, serve as microcosms of cultural exchange and resilience, where the act of cooking becomes a celebration of heritage and identity.
Each photograph tells a story of community through the universal language of food, transcending linguistic and cultural barriers, inviting to embrace the beauty of diversity and the power of food to create a sense of home wherever one may roam. This ongoing project has been developed over the course of one year, thanks to the cooperation of 13 families.
