Oscar (left) with his twin brother Omar and mother Fresa in their home in Queens, NY. Oscar is the first person in his family to own a home in the US. Fresa immigrated to the US from the Dominican Republic in 1969 and in 1971 her husband joined her.

An educator and retired electrical engineer, Amaris’ mom and dad immigrated to the US at 11 and 18 respectively. While they are both from the Dominican Republic, her dad came by way of Puerto Rico as a political refugee. They met in college, married and raised two kids, one of whom (pictured here) would become a revolutionary multimedia artist. Born and raised in uptown New York City, Amaris has strong cultural ties to DR, and has produced work and formed a collectivity around the recent denationalization of
Dominicans of Haitian descent on the island.

When asked about the American Dream Patrick says "In comparison to how difficult things are for people in other countries, especially Honduras, I definitely feel I have opportunities and advantages available to me [here in the US] to achieve those dreams.

This ongoing photo series is inspired by the current political climate regarding immigration in the US. As a first generation American, I feel compelled to tell the stories of other immigrant children growing up in the US who identify as both American and Immigrant. Children whose parents left everything they have ever known in search of a better life. These images explore what that 'better life' looks like decades after families immigrated to the US.
