Gaia Squarci is an Italian documentary photographer based in Milan and New York City. Pastor Juan Carlos Ruiz is photographed at The Church of the Good Shepherd in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York City. Originally from Guerrero, Mexico, Ruiz earned a reputation as a human-rights advocate and tireless fighter for the undocumented community during the lockdown. He has being helping the ones in need by organizing food distributions at his church, arranging for discounted burials and for the transportation of ashes, receiving calls for help directly on his mobile phone. “It was like a war had started” he told New Yorker journalist Jonathan Blitzer. Barbara, my next door neighbor I had never met before, came out in a pajama and a woolen hat to throw the trash, and stood on the sidewalk for a while in the sun. She’s 65 and hasn’t gone out in two weeks, she can’t even go to church, she told me in a Guyanese accent. Crown Heights, Brooklyn © Gaia Squarci

Gaia Squarci is an Italian documentary photographer based in Milan and New York City. Ebony Kinch, who brings food to patients at Woodhull Hospital, poses for a portrait in front of the hospital. Kinch told me about the day she had to feed patients in the ER. “I’ve never seen nothing like that. I had to call out sick the next day. It was like a movie that I watched. I walk into the emergency room and everybody is laying down, looking half-dead. It was flooded, people in the gurneys, people in chairs. Everybody is at home watching the news. They don't see what I see. This has been one of the toughest times besides me growing up”. Brooklyn, New York City. The production of this photograph has been supported by Cortona On the Move and the Covid19 Visual Project.

Theodore. East River Park, New York City. Theodore might be 7 or 8 years old. I’d like to be able to see this crisis through his eyes for a moment. To guess which blurry memories, perhaps a couple of sharp moments, will stay with him in his adult life. Theodore plays in silence on a tree that seems to be carved around him. When I start shooting he closes his eyes and stops moving for a while. I wonder how he imagines the photograph in his head, at the very moment it’s taken. The production of this photograph has been supported by Cortona On the Move and the Covid19 Visual Project.
