According to the UN Spotlight Initiative, in the first four months of 2020 emergency calls related to violence against women and girls increased by 53%, in a country already plagued by a widespread problem of femicide. When he was asked to address the issue, Mexico’s president Andrés Manuel López Obrador stated that “Ninety percent of those calls that you’re referring to are fake”, denying the credibility of some of the statistics provided by his own government.
"All my life I lived domestic violence. In 25 years I turned to institutions 10 times, but I never received the support I have now, I had almost given up. (…) When we come from domestic violence we feel worthless. My husband used to instill this feeling:“you’re fat, you’re ugly, who is going to love you”? And deep in our hearts we end up believing it. Now they made me feel the most important woman, because I’m in a safe place, it’s like living a dream. (…) If someone is listening I’d love women not to stay silent. Maybe my denunciations came late, and they first were ignored, but now people are paying attention, the law is supporting us much more. Don’t hesitate to press charges." Flor.
