I am a photographer, born in London, England but now working in (and out of) the lower Hudson Valley, New York which is 90 minutes north of Manhatten. I am insatiably curious — about our world, how it works (or...
A look at the work of John Vergara, a talented luthier whose workshop is tucked away just off Main Street in Beacon, NY. John makes and repairs various kinds of stringed instruments including guitars and violins, and less familiar middle eastern instruments such as the oud and kanun.
John's love of music started at the age of 13 when he was staying with a Portuguese family. He studied under virtuoso flamenco, classical and jazz artists and performed professionally until a hand injury prevented him from persuing a performing career. John then turned to luthiery studying under a German master. A trip to Turkey introduced John to the oud, a stringed instrument common in the near and middle east. John found he could play the oud without problem and studied under perfromers in the US.
John is one of very few luthiers in the US that make and play the Oud.
