This projects documents moments from the lives of my niece and nephew Andrea and Ángel. Although they are no longer children, they still live withs items from their childhood thar are combined with others more appropriate for teenagers: a fusion between their imagination, their struggle for individual independence, and the construction of identity.
The exploration of the family universe allows me to revisit moments in the past, as a sort of flashback, in order to search for hidden meanings that enhance the present context. I identify with those films that use physical space to represent an emotional space, a symbolism that I apply to photographic images. For example, a metaphor for the sinister works in the same way as the things that appeal to us because of their unfamiliarity and because of the mysterious shapes they take, by evoking a strange place that is associated with a period of intense physical and internal change.
My niece and nephew’s childhood and the memory of my own were factors behind this investigation of memory and fiction. By grouping their experiences with my own, the past and the present, I attempt to reconcile a break in my past with a combined vision that is able to bring together the child’s view and the adult’s perspective in order to channel subconscious impulses or lapses*. I mix fiction and reality in scenes that combine direct information and enigmas so that the image might become the threshold of a story waiting to be told.
*Lapse from lapsus, a Latin word that originally meant slip, currently refers to any involuntary errors or mistakes, so it also tends to take the meaning of a “Freaudian slip”. The term Freudian slip or parapraxis is defined as a manifestation of the subconscious in the form of a mistake that appears in conscious expression. The explanation given in general psychoanalysis lies in the emergence of what is repressed (generally occurring at times of stress, anxiety, anguish or attention deficit) when the conscious repression is slackened.
