Going to the U.S. to work for 8 months means taking very little. Men will purchase gifts for family on their return but travel to farms with no more than a suitcase. The majority of men I spoke with carried a prayer card for protection with them, such as here St. Pedro, the Patron Saint of fishermen; Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Patron Saint of the Americas and Mexico, and St. Jude, the Patron Saint of hope and impossible causes.
