Le grand-père, le père, le petit-fils: ils partagent et perpétuent un même prénom. « Au nom du Père » est une série de photographies, en noir et blanc, sur cette tradition et cet héritage particulier en Equateur : transmettre le prénom du père à son fils, de génération en génération. 52 familles et autant de portraits de famille, réalisés entre 2013 et 2020 aux quatre coins de ce pays d’Amérique du Sud.

In the name of the Father.

"In the name of the Father" is a series of black-and-white photographs on this particular Ecuadorian tradition and heritage: passing on the father's first name to his son, from generation to generation. 52 families and as many family portraits, shot between 2013 and 2020 in the four corners of this South American country.

Story :

Shortly after I arrived in Ecuador a few years ago, a friend, José Antonio, invited me to his home. Over the course of the afternoon, he introduced me to his son, and then his father. José Antonio and José Antonio. I couldn't believe it. I was looking at three José Antonio's! This situation obsessed me for many, many months, and deep down I kept coming back to it. In fact, this tradition of passing on first names from father to son, repeated over several generations, died out in France at the dawn of the First World War, and I was surprised to discover it that day.

Trinity families": the male power triangle.

I then spent the next few years meeting these 'trinity families', in order to paint a portrait of these generations of men, from all walks of life and all corners of the country. All the families who opened their doors to me touched me not only by their generosity but also by their happiness and pride in sharing this intimate piece of their history.

Sometimes, this transmission was part of a tradition perceived, in their view, as "not that important", or an explicit desire to "unite even more" the family, to bring its members closer together by identifying them, by welding them together through the identity of first names. Occasionally, it was also the result of bitter negotiation between the parents; but much more often, it was a matter of pride, homage, even a desire to transcend from generation to generation. However, despite these differences, one structure kept recurring: behind the images, there was always an inheritance with a heavy meaning, assumed or lived in very different ways: the triangle, the father, the male, the name, filiation. All the most important and fundamental structures of human society seemed to be at play here, in front of me, in the apparent simplicity of a triangle of first names.

Black and white photographs.

The photographs were taken in color but are presented in black and white, with the aim of minimizing visual distractions and reinforcing the effect of repetition, almost seeking a certain boredom. Black and white helps to reinforce the feeling that behind the many differences, we're still looking at one and the same photograph, one and the same family. One and the same trinity. Ours? Mine?

One and the same place: the living room.

On the other hand, all the photographs show these families in one and the same place: their living room. This is a paradoxical place. In a way, it represents a public space within a private one. It's where we receive visitors, and where we carefully place what we want to show, in a carefully chosen order. It's the place where you reveal yourself and show off. For this reason, it's rarely a matter of chance to have placed there, for example, the grandson's trophies, a painting of Christ, a photograph of the grandparents or an object of highly symbolic value. In this way, the photographs presented are also an anthropological and sociological portrait of the Ecuadorian habitat from 2010 to 2020, a portrait that crosses social classes, geographical boundaries and ethnic groups.

And yet, within the rigid framework defined by the location, the families all had the same freedom, which is also the same obligation: that of deciding together how to position themselves in relation to each other, and how to dress, thus becoming the true actors of their photograph, the directors who reveal the modality according to which they want to show themselves, and what, in fine, they wish to give to be seen. Who's in the center? Standing or sitting? In a suit or T-shirt? What physical and symbolic distances? What gestures carry meaning? What expressions?
