Mitteleuropa is not just a word, it is a dream, a nightmare, it is and idea of culture as well an imperialism plan. Mittleuropa has been an ambition of an empire that ended in two world war, later it has been the idea of an unified peaceful Europe. The Mittleeuropa have seen the born of European nationalism and the nazism as well as the Communism project. The sign and the celebration of these times are located in its territory, sometime hidden other time preserved, remembering the horror or the dream of greatness. The Germany elaborated and condemned the horror and the craziness of the Nazi Era doing a generational “Mea Culpa”. Today the structures and the concentration camps built in the first half of the 1900 are still there but this time used as museum of the memory with the hope that the human race won’t repeat his own mistakes. As well as the proofs of the horror of the Nazist, the sign of the Communist and of the division of Europe resulted in the Cold War are there; Majestic Communist Statues and rest of fences, walls and barded wire resist the time remembering the moment the Europeans stop speaking each other.
Today, the Mitteleuropa and its surrounding are still territories of contradictions and paradoxes. The same Nations that most look for an ecological change are the ones with the highest coal based energy production, the same countries that, after the Second War World, more worked to in term of education programs to avoid the horror of the Nazism see now the raise of ultra-right movements. Finally after years recovering from the economical crisis started after the 1945, the Mitteleuropa’s Countries are now the riches of Europe, thanks also to the help of the European Community, but still, forgetting the past these countries exercise an idea of Europe based on austerity and and economical discrimination and punishment for who is not able to respect the rules that often the Central Europe Countries make.
In a historical moment in which the European Community is fragile and at risk, the Mitteleuropa’s countries could be the glue that shape a new solidar, unite and common Europe if the would be able to find the great positive value that belong to their past history without making the same mistakes of the same past.
