Russel Albert Daniels’ (Diné, Ho-Chunk, and of European descent) work stands in the cross current of art, reportage, and re-indigenization. His craft places storytelling at the forefront of a traditional photographic practice which aims to bring visibility and make connections in Native American and underserved communities. His projects explore the ways in which identity, place, and history illuminate the aftermath of colonization and manifest destiny. Russel was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and studied photojournalism at the University of Montana School of Journalism. His photos are included in the permeant collections at The Library of Congress, Utah Museum of Fine Art, Salt Lake County Visual Art Collection, The State of Utah Alice Merrill Horne Art Collection, Amon Carter Museum of Art, and J. Willard Marriott Library. His photographs have been exhibited nationally and locally including the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Utah Valley University Museum and Utah Museum of Fine Art. In 2024, part of his project La Cautiva will be exhibited at the Tacoma Art Museum and Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis. His photos have appeared in National Geographic, The New York Times, Mother Jones, High Country News, ProPublica, Sierra Magazine, and Emergence Magazine.
