Monte Calvario (2015)

 Monte Calvario (2015)

In 1883, the Chilean government started the European colonisation campaign in the Araucania Region, thus "ending" the conflicts associated to the occupation of the territory. The plan consisted in a process of population and urban development of the region located in the south of Chile through the foundation of locations by immigrants from Europe. This is how between 1904 and 1905, in exchange for land and economic rewards, 88 Italian families arrived from the Emilia-Romagna Region to settle in a remote landscape in the Nahuelbuta mountain range. What happened along the way is far from what was planned initially: human trade, family feuds, deceit and a long and exhausting trip that carved wounds and deeply marked the community. The settlement was named Monte Calvario (Mount Calvary). Today, Capitán Pastene is a town of about 4000 inhabitants in search for its own identity characterized by the mix of cultures and the inheritance of local conflicts; where the prosperity of tourism and the timber operation are now the new promise.
