Since July 2018, Haiti has been gripped by political unrest following rising inflation and the embezzlement of $2 billion from Petrocaribe, a cut-price-oil aid program Venezuela offered to several Caribbean countries, by government officials and private firms, including President Jovenel Moïse. Since then there have been calls for Moïse to resign.

Due to the lack of governance and instability, nearly 4 million Haitians are facing severe food insecurity, and women working in the informal sector have been negatively impacted because of the crisis.

The political unrest that has held Haiti in a stalemate since July 2018 has disproportionately affected women and poor families, dependent on informal activities and foreign income. I explored their journey through these recurrent crises and lockdowns, and reflected on their conceptions of freedom.
