In architecture, the term facade encompasses the outwardly visible wall surfaces of a building, including windows, doors, and other elements. While these components are typically constructed from materials such as concrete, glass, wood, brick, or masonry, for Michael Nguyen, they transcend mere inanimate structures. To him, they are akin to the face of a human, conveying character, personality, and stories.
Nguyen’s photography often focuses not on the entirety of a building, but rather on its details and unique features. Much like approaching a person and observing their distinct features up close – the sparkle in their eyes, the tone of their voice, or the intricate pattern of their clothing – Nguyen’s lens captures the essence of architectural elements.
With this perspective in mind, Nguyen’s photographs portray buildings not as static edifices with five facades and four walls, but as dynamic sculptures with a life of their own. The windows serve as their eyes, offering glimpses into their soul, while open doors beckon viewers to explore their inner narratives. The architectural composition, whether it be a mosaic of bricks, a dance of glass panels, or the organic flow of wooden accents, acts as their captivating attire, enriching our cities and urban landscapes with beauty and vitality.
