Summary
Joy of water is an ongoing long term project documenting access to water to New York youth, thanks to the work of private associations. The dance and Candace and her son Jari coming out of the water.

Portrait of Kimberly and her daughter in a green wall. Kimberly has been a strong voice in the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020 and 2021 in New York city. This portrait is part of a sitting for the mural "Not tired Yet" , including 11 women and trans women activists of the movement in New York
New York is a seaside city but learning to swim is a luxury, inaccessible to a large portion of the population. For working mothers, it is especially difficult to find time to teach their children water safety skills . The dance and the picture of Candace and her son Jari show the shared joy and confidence of a day by the water: part of the ongoing project “Joy of Water” depicting the possibility to learn water skills and surfing for free thanks to associations like Black Surfing Rockaway.

Kimberly Bernard and her daughter, in her own words : “ Being a Black woman activist, it’s important to lead by example, and to help create the world I want my daughter to live in”.  Kimberly has been a fierce voice leading the Black Lives Matter movement in the protests of 2020, 2021 with her group @blackwomxnmarch. This portrait was taken in 2020, as part of a sitting for the mural “Not tired yet” depicting the relentless force Black women and Black Trans women are bringing to American society to enact progress and policy change.

Being a mother and a photographer is an opportunity but also brings its share of challenges. The chance to always have this desire to immortalize the moments of life of my children but also of all the other children who cross my path and attention. The challenge is to be available for photographic opportunities and to balance family life and  the high cost of childcare.
Being a mother makes me feel s deep sense  of understanding and connection with all the mothers  around me and the desire to share their stories, and highlight all that still need to be done to improve the lives of so many families and children.
