The Casbah of Algiers in Algeria is probably one of the most beautiful sites in the Mediterranean and is a unique type of Islamic city, or medina, with its ancient mosques and Ottoman palaces.
But time and the earthquake of 2003 have damaged the buildings. Although it is a Unesco World Heritage Site, the Kasbah is poorly maintained and little visited by foreign tourists.
Some Algerians come to recharge their batteries when they want to take a break from the noise and pollution of the city center.
