While growing up in Cuba, my mom believed that crying was for weak people and didn't solve anything; I grew up thinking it was wrong. So, I was not allowed to cry.
After arriving in the United States, I lived in a mother-in-law home at my dad's property, he lived with his wife, and step kids. One day, I knocked on their door, and as my stepmom saw me standing outside knocking, she wouldn't open the door for me. So, I called my dad and told him what was happening, and he said that if she did not want to open the door for me, he could not do anything about it. That was the most disappointing day of my life. I felt I was treated like a dog, like a drug addict, a stranger, someone who he was ashamed of. My dad was the world to me, and I was nothing to him. He had abandoned me.
After that incident, I fell into depression, didn't see the purpose of life, and didn't have any motivation. In addition, losing the love of my father made me feel worthless. Then, a friend told me about a psychologist, Olga Rojas, he was seeing, and I decided to try it out. It wasn’t easy to make the decision because I also had to think about spending money in my therapy sessions, and my income was not very abundant. It was just enough for me to cover my bills. Once I began the therapy sessions I learned how my trauma of abandonment as a child and young adult has influenced certain aspects of my life, including the lack of feeling security, self-esteem, self-concept, and stablishing limits.
When the phycologist did hypnosis to help me heal the issues with my dad, she asked me to visualize I was with him, holding hands and walking together. And once she told me to let go of his hand, I couldn't; doing that was difficult for me. Finally, I cried so much I felt I was crying a river, and I could not stop. I then learned that it is okay to cry. I am not ashamed of it anymore. And now, I cry easily because I had never cried before; I remember being 23 years old and telling myself, “Why would I cry? I won't solve anything by crying.”

Mientras crecía en Cuba, mi madre creía que llorar era de débiles y no solucionaba nada; crecí pensando que llorar estaba mal. Así que no se me permitía llorar.
Después de llegar a Estados Unidos, viví en la casa que estaba en la propiedad de la casa de mi padre, su esposa y sus hijastros. Un día, toque la Puerta de la casa de mi padre y mi madrastra, al verme fuera llamando, no quiso abrirme. No fue fácil tomar la decisión porque también tenía que pensar en gastar dinero en mis sesiones de terapia, y mis ingresos no eran muy abundantes. Sólo me alcanzaba para cubrir mis facturas. Una vez que empecé las sesiones de terapia aprendí cómo mi trauma de abandono de niña y de joven ha influido en ciertos aspectos de mi vida, como la falta de sensación de seguridad, de autoestima, de autoconcepto y de establecimiento de límites.
Cuando la psicóloga me hizo hipnosis para sanar los problemas con mi padre, me pidió que visualizara que estaba con él, cogidos de la mano y caminando juntos. Y cuando me dijo que le soltara la mano, no pude; hacer eso me resultaba difícil. Finalmente, lloré tanto que sentí que estaba llorando un río, y no podía parar. Entonces aprendí que está bien llorar. Ya no me avergüenzo de ello. Y ahora lloro con facilidad porque nunca antes había llorado; recuerdo que tenía 23 años y me decía a mí misma: "¿Por qué voy a llorar? No resolveré nada llorando".

As a man from Mexico, there is a lot of machismo in my country. That makes men be a certain way. If you feel something, you don’t express it. We always say we are okay because if we are not, society judges us. We are supposed to be strong and support women when they need us. We don’t break, so it’s hard for a man to accept that he needs help. Women are seen as fragile, as if they always need help, which has made them seen as victims and less than others, which is also a problem, at least in Mexico.
At some point in my life, I wasn’t feeling well. So many things were happening. My daughter and wife were also going through depression. When my father passed away, I fell into depression as well, and I didn’t know it until a friend told me I needed help. So many people know they require help, but in many instances, they don’t accept it.
Now that I have been able to talk to a professional, Juanita Herrera, I can better understand what I was feeling and why certain things were happening in my life. I can see things from a different perspective and understand I can’t control everything in it, I can only control a specific part and let other things be.

Como hombre Méxicano, hay mucho machismo en mi país. Eso hace que los hombres sean de cierta manera. Si sientes algo, no lo expresas. Siempre decimos que estamos bien porque si no lo estamos, la sociedad nos juzga. Se supone que debemos ser fuertes y apoyar a las mujeres cuando nos necesitan. No podemos ser debiles, así que es difícil para un hombre aceptar que necesita ayuda. Las mujeres son vistas como frágiles, como si siempre necesitaran ayuda, lo que ha hecho que sean vistas como víctimas y menos que los demás, lo que también es un problema, al menos en México.
En algún momento de mi vida, no me sentía bien. Estaban pasando muchas cosas. Mi hija y mi esposa estaban pasando por depresión. Cuando falleció mi padre, yo también caí en depresión, y no lo supe hasta que un amigo me dijo que yo necesitaba ayuda. Muchas personas saben que necesitan ayuda, pero en muchos casos no la aceptan.
Ahora que he podido hablar con una professional, Juanita Herrera, puedo entender mejor lo que estaba sintiendo y por qué estaban pasando ciertas cosas en mi vida. Puedo ver las cosas desde una perspectiva diferente y entender que no puedo controlar todo, sólo puedo controlar una parte específica y soltar el control de las otras cosas en mi vida.

I was a stylist in Venezuela, and my business was very successful. I had a significant other and a son, an adoptive son from my ex-boyfriend; he was given to me by his mother when he was 3 months old. We were a family.
At some point in my life, I had to care for my mother because she had back surgery. Her psychologist in Venezuela said she had become sick due to her deep depression. She would rather not live anymore. I bathed and fed her, and even though it was not the ideal situation, I enjoyed spending time with her. I wanted to be the best son I could be to her. One day, while driving around the city with my nephew and his wife, we stopped at a traffic control.
The government officials saw a Venezuelan flag in my car and accused me of being against the government. They got me in so much trouble, but I was innocent; the flag I had was the one I used in my salon during holidays to represent my patriotism, but they took it the wrong way. My nephew and I were detained for four months and suffered all kinds of abuse. Once they let us go, they started going to my house, asking for money, and threatening me that if I didn't give them money, they would detain my son. It got to a point where I ran out of money, and I felt very unsafe. My only escape was to leave the country, and I decided to immigrate to the United States.
My mom was still sick, and I was her caretaker, but I couldn't handle it anymore. It was not safe for my family or myself. I knew that my mom was depressed, and her motivation to live had ended the day my brother died in a car accident. I felt too guilty to leave my mom alone. A month after I arrived in the USA, she passed away. It was almost as if she were waiting for me to leave, so she could let go and die. She knew it would be difficult for me to see her die if I was still in Venezuela, so she waited.
I've been suffering from depression for three years now, and there are days when I don't know the purpose of living, but I tell myself that I have to get through this. I know I need to see a therapist, but I'm scared. Furthermore, I'm afraid that if I do, I will be put on a record and it will affect my migratory status. I filed for asylum and couldn't risk losing that for seeing a therapist.
I believe in God, and I know he is watching over me. I wake up with a positive attitude and go to sleep with a positive attitude. I do the best I can to stay strong, and I will.

Yo era estilista en Venezuela y mi negocio tenía mucho éxito. Tenía una pareja y un hijo, hijo adoptivo de mi ex novio; me lo dio su madre cuando tenía 3 meses. Éramos una familia.
En algún momento de mi vida, tuve que cuidar de mi madre porque la habían operado de la espalda. Su psicólogo en Venezuela dijo que ella se había enfermado debido a su profunda depresión. Prefería no vivir más. Yo la bañaba y la alimentaba y, aunque no era la situación ideal, disfrutaba pasar tiempo con ella. Quería ser el mejor hijo posible para ella. Un día, mientras conducía por la ciudad con mi sobrino y su mujer, nos detuvimos en un control de tráfico.
Los funcionarios gubernamentales vieron una bandera venezolana en mi carro y me acusaron de estar en contra del gobierno. Me metieron en un buen lío, pero yo era inocente; la bandera que llevaba era la que utilizaba en mi salón durante las vacaciones para representar mi patriotismo, pero se lo tomaron a mal. Mi sobrino y yo estuvimos detenidos cuatro meses y sufrimos todo tipo de abusos. Una vez que nos soltaron, empezaron a ir a mi casa, a pedirme dinero y a amenazarme con que si no les daba dinero, detendrían a mi hijo. Llegó un momento en que me quedé sin dinero y me sentí muy inseguro. Mi única salida era irme del país, y decidí emigrar a Estados Unidos.
Mi madre seguía enferma y yo era su cuidador, pero ya no podía más. No era seguro ni para mi familia ni para mí. Sabía que mi madre estaba deprimida y que su motivación para vivir había terminado el día en que mi hermano murió en un accidente de carro. Me sentía demasiado culpable por dejar a mi madre sola. Un mes después de llegar a Estados Unidos, ella falleció. Era como si estuviera esperando a que me fuera para dejarse ir y morir. Sabía que me resultaría difícil verla morir si yo seguía en Venezuela, así que esperó.
Llevo tres años sufriendo depresión y hay días en los que no sé para qué vivir, pero me digo a mí mismo que tengo que superarlo. Sé que necesito ver a un terapeuta, pero tengo miedo. Además, tengo miedo de que, si lo hago, me fichen y afecte a mi estatus migratorio. Solicité asilo y no podría arriesgarme a perderlo por ver a un terapeuta.
Creo en Dios y sé que vela por mí. Me levanto con una actitud positiva y me acuesto con una actitud positiva. Hago todo lo que puedo para mantenerme fuerte, y lo haré.

Since we got our cats in our home, it has brought many benefits to our family. My husband feels that he doesn’t overthink too much anymore and feels less anxious. My daughter has let herself be more open to expressing her emotions, and I think that they have helped me to be more present in everyday life.
As humans, we need to connect with other beings to survive. When we don’t have that physical contact, pets offer that unconditional love. They help us stimulate communication and self-care because they depend on us, and caring for them is essential. They are a source of happiness and calmness, and they help us release oxytocin. Furthermore, they also help us reduce stress levels. Pets live in a constant present moment and can perceive our feelings. From the psychotherapy perspective, we can see that they can bring us to the present. Systemic therapy tells us that pets can hold conflicts that limit us in our present. They can sense our feelings and can take our sicknesses in our place to make us feel better. They are a bridge to consciousness. Their beauty and sweetness can sensibilize even the most insensible individuals.

Desde que tenemos gatos en casa, nuestra familia se ha beneficiado de muchas cosas. Mi marido siente que ya no piensa demasiado y se siente menos ansioso. Mi hija se ha permitido ser más abierta a la hora de expresar sus emociones, y creo que a mí me han ayudado a estar más presente en la vida cotidiana.
Como humanos, necesitamos conectar con otros seres para sobrevivir. Cuando no tenemos ese contacto físico, las mascotas nos ofrecen ese amor incondicional. Nos ayudan a estimular la comunicación y el autocuidado porque dependen de nosotros, y cuidarlos es esencial. Son una fuente de felicidad y calma, y nos ayudan a liberar oxitocina. Además, también nos ayudan a reducir los niveles de estrés. Las mascotas viven en un momento presente constante y pueden percibir nuestros sentimientos. Desde la perspectiva de la psicoterapia, podemos ver que pueden traernos al presente. La terapia sistémica nos dice que las mascotas pueden contener conflictos que nos limitan en nuestro presente. Pueden percibir nuestros sentimientos y ponerse en nuestro lugar para hacernos sentir mejor. Son un puente hacia la conciencia. Su belleza y dulzura pueden sensibilizar incluso a los individuos más insensibles.

During the pandemic, I was going through a divorce, and I had to move into my mother's house. There were so many emotions going through my head. Feelings of not being worthy, and not being good enough. I was angry with God and was feeling lost. One day, my mother and I got into a terrible fight.
I packed all of my belongings into my Toyota Corolla, and I left. I was homeless for three weeks, and in those three weeks, I had to lean on the people in my field who made me feel safe, seen, and heard, my friends.
I slept on their couches and used my car as a closet. They gave me the safe space to be authentically me. To grow, to fall apart, to heal from my traumas, and to learn who I was and what I wanted in life. During that time, and friend and I created a self-help Instagram page called “The Strong Sunflowers” where we could share about ourselves and grow as a community of people, where we were comfortable enough to share personal stores and uplift each other.
Fast-forward to last year, I got into a car accident in my Toyota Corolla, which was a total loss. It hit me really hard. I was depressed because so much of my identity was tied up in that car. It had gotten me through so much. It was my only home when I had none. It was the only thing that was mine. It was like the death of that version of me that was homeless and sleeping on people's couches.
I fell into depression and had heard about a psychologist, Olga Rojas. So, I decided to see her; I needed help. I learned the car was not responsible for getting me through the situation. It was me. I deserved remarkable things and I am strong enough to overcome all obstacles. I learned that as challenges come into my life, better things will be coming my way.

Durante la pandemia, me estaba divorciando y tuve que mudarme a casa de mi madre. Tantas emociones pasaban por mi cabeza. Sentimientos de no ser digna, de no ser lo suficientemente buena. Me enoje con Dios y simplemente me senti perdida. Un día, mi madre y yo tuvimos una pelea terrible.
Empaqué todas mis pertenencias en mi Toyota Corolla. Y me fui. Estuve tres semanas sin hogar y, en esas tres semanas, tuve que apoyarme en las personas de mi campo que me hacían sentir segura, vista y escuchada, mis amigos.
Dormí en sus sofás y utilicé mi coche como armario. Me dieron el espacio seguro para ser auténticamente yo. Para crecer, desmoronarme, curarme de mis traumas y aprender quién era y qué quería en la vida. Durante ese tiempo, una amiga y yo creamos una página en Instagram de autoayuda llamada "Los Girasoles Fuertes" donde podíamos compartir sobre nosotras mismas y crecer como comunidad online, donde nos sentíamos lo suficientemente cómodas como para compartir relatos personales y ayudarnos mutuamente.
El año pasado, tuve un accidente de coche en mi Toyota Corolla, que fue una perdida total. Me afectó mucho. Me deprimí porque gran parte de mi identidad estaba ligada a ese coche. Me había ayudado a superar muchas cosas. Era mi único hogar cuando no tenía ninguno. Era lo único que era mío. Fue como la muerte de esa versión de mí, la que no tenía hogar y dormía en los sofás de los demas.
Caí en depresión y había oído hablar de una psicóloga, Olga Rojas. Así que decidí verla; necesitaba ayuda. Aprendí que el coche no era el responsable de sacarme de esa situación, fui yo. Merezco cosas extraordinarias y soy lo bastante fuerte para superar todos los obstáculos. Aprendí que a medida que llegan retos a mi vida, me llegan cosas mejores.

When the pandemic started, I began to feel my mental health collapse. The isolation was challenging for me, and I remember feeling more distant from my parents because of how I felt. Having a virtual connection is not the same as a physical connection, and that affected me.
I began to withdraw, and I was having intrusive thoughts. I struggled with self-harm for a while, to the point where I needed help. I was nervous about discussing mental health with my mom because my parents had never told me about it. I told her I needed help because I had suicidal urges. They acted immediately. The next day I went to the school counselor, and they brought someone from Centerstone. Once they did the assessment, they concluded that I needed to go to the hospital. I didn’t stay at the hospital long, since they said I could go home. What I needed was therapy and to have my family as a support system. I required personal and physical connection.
Once schools opened, and I could go in person, things felt better. Of course, nothing will feel the same as before the pandemic, but it feels a lot better. I needed that human connection; things started to snap back in place once that happened.
I think there should be mental health practices that focus only on the Latinx community. For example, my parents are from Mexico and Guatemala, and the therapist I had was Latina. I liked her because even though I was born here, I felt we had some similarities, and she could understand me better.

Cuando empezó la pandemia, empecé a sentir que mi salud mental se derrumbaba. El aislamiento fue un reto para mí, y recuerdo que me sentía más distante de mis padres por cómo me sentía. Tener una conexión virtual no es lo mismo que una conexión física, y eso me afectó.
Empecé a aislarme y a tener pensamientos intrusivos. Luché con la autoagresión durante un tiempo, hasta el punto de necesitar ayuda. Me daba nervios hablar de salud mental con mi madre porque mis padres nunca me habían hablado de ello. Le dije que necesitaba ayuda porque tenía impulsos suicidas. Actuaron inmediatamente. Al día siguiente fui al consejero del colegio y trajeron a alguien de Centerstone. Una vez que hicieron la evaluación, llegaron a la conclusión de que necesitaba ir al hospital. No estuve mucho tiempo en el hospital, ya que me dijeron que podía irme a casa. Lo que necesitaba era terapia y tener a mi familia como sistema de apoyo. Necesitaba una conexión personal y física.
Una vez que abrieron las escuelas y pude ir en persona, las cosas mejoraron. Por supuesto, nada será como antes de la pandemia, pero me siento mucho mejor. Necesitaba esa conexión humana; las cosas empezaron a volver a su sitio en cuanto eso ocurrió.
Creo que debería haber servicios de salud mental centradas únicamente en la comunidad hispana. Por ejemplo, mis padres son de México y Guatemala, y la terapeuta que tuve era latina. Me gustaba porque, aunque yo naci aquí, sentía que teníamos algunas similitudes y ella podía entenderme mejor.

When I was living in Colombia, I felt that I was very disconnected from myself. I was following all the norms that were expected of me. To be a successful woman, raise my daughter, and do it by myself because I was a strong woman who could do it all, I didn’t need the help of any man, and I believed it. But there was a moment when life showed me my internal imbalance, many things in my life were falling apart, my profession, interpersonal relationships, work and I had some problems with my daughter; this showed me that I needed to work on myself.
I began to look for answers to improve my life situations, I began to see that there was a family history. The unsuccessful relationships came from far away, from my parents and grandparents, from my ancestors. My relationship with my daughter was also related to my bad relationship with my mother. Once I started to work on myself, I realized that all areas of my life began to improve and I took the opportunity to make a major change and immigrate with my ten year old daughter to the United States.
Emigrating meant leaving behind the stability of our lives. Immigrating can create many conflicts in us, which can be passed on to future generations. One of the ways it affects us is that it makes us feel that we do not belong anywhere.
Today, I am a Systemic Family Constellator. I work as a psychotherapist guiding personal processes where my clients discover the unconscious origin of what is generating imbalance in their lives in order to assume responsibility, get out of victim mode, and stop blaming others. Once we have inner peace, no matter how difficult the situation is, we can overcome it with more wisdom. Mental health helped me to be at peace with my reality and gave me tools to transform it.

Cuando vivía en Colombia, sentía que estaba muy desconectada de mí misma. Seguía todas las normas que se esperaban de mí. Ser una mujer éxitosa, criar a mi hija y hacerlo yo misma porque era una mujer fuerte que podía hacerlo todo, no necesitaba la ayuda de ningún hombre, y me lo creía. Pero hubo un momento en que la vida me mostró afuera mi desequilibrio interno, muchas cosas en mi vida se derrumbaban, mi profesión, las relaciones interpersonales, laborales y tuve algunos problemas con mi hija; esto me mostró que necesitaba trabajar en mí misma.
Comencé a buscar respuestas para mejorar las situaciones de mi vida, empecé a ver que había una historia familiar. Las relaciones infructuosas venían de lejos, de mis padres y mis abuelos, de mis ancestros. La relación con mi hija también estaba relacionada con mi mala relación con mi madre. Cuando vi esto, empecé a trabajar en mí misma. Una vez que empecé a hacerlo, me di cuenta de que todas las áreas de mi vida comenzaban a mejorar y aproveché la oportunidad para hacer un cambio importante e inmigrar con mi hija de diez años a Estados Unidos.
Cuando emigramos, significa dejar atrás la estabilidad de nuestras vidas. Inmigrar puede crear muchos conflictos en nuestras vidas, que pueden transmitirse a las generaciones futuras. Una de las formas en que nos afecta es que nos hace sentir que no pertenecemos a ningún sitio.
Hoy en dia, soy acompañante en Biodescodificación y Consteladora Familiar Sistémica. Trabajo como psicoterapeuta guiando procesos personales en donde mis clientes descubren el origen inconsciente de lo que está generando desequilibrio en sus vidas para poder asumir así la responsabilidad, salir del modo víctima y dejar de culpar a los demás. Una vez que tenemos paz interior, no importa lo difícil que sea la situación, podemos superarla con más sabiduría. La salud mental me ayudó a estar en paz con mi realidad y me aporto herramientas para transformarla.

One of the most challenging times in my life was when I gave birth to my son; I was by myself and went through postpartum depression; I was just twenty-six years old. It would have been easier if I had a support group that helped me get out of that mental state.
When my son was fifteen, I took him to a psychologist who spoke only English. My son had emigrated from Panama with me. He saw that therapist for a while, but we felt it didn't help him much. Six years later, he started seeing a therapist, Olga Rojas, who speaks Spanish, and we realized that when he was younger it didn't work for him because they didn't speak his native language, Spanish.
Apart from my postpartum depression, I went through many challenges in my life. I have seen many Hispanic women going through domestic violence stay in the relationship because of fear of being alone. I remember growing up in Panama, we were taught that women should not be alone and should have a life partner. But we were not taught that it’s okay to be alone, to love ourselves, and respect ourselves. We were encouraged to be in a relationship, but it was not emphasized that it was important to be in a relationship based on love and respect.

Uno de los momentos más difíciles de mi vida fue cuando di a luz a mi hijo; estaba sola y pasé por una depresión posparto; solo tenía veintiséis años. Habría sido más fácil si hubiera tenido un grupo de apoyo que me hubiera ayudado a salir de ese estado mental.
Cuando mi hijo tenía quince años, lo llevé a un psicólogo que sólo hablaba inglés. Mi hijo había emigrado de Panamá conmigo. Vio a esa terapeuta durante un tiempo, pero nos pareció que no le ayudaba mucho. Seis años después, empezó a ver a una terapeuta, Olga Rojas, que habla español, y nos dimos cuenta de que cuando era más pequeño no le funcionaba porque no hablaban su lengua materna, el español.
Aparte de mi depresión posparto, pasé por muchos retos en mi vida. He visto a muchas mujeres hispanas que sufren violencia doméstica y permanecen en la relación por miedo a quedarse solas. Recuerdo que cuando crecí en Panamá nos enseñaron que las mujeres no debían estar solas y que debían tener un compañero de vida. Pero no nos enseñaron que está bien estar solas, querernos a nosotras mismas y respetarnos. At some point in my life, I was in an awful place, I was depressed and in a very toxic relationship, and I had very low self-esteem. In addition, I was highly anxious and suffering from obesity at the time.
I found the group of women at the Women's Resource Center, and I realized that I deserved better, and left that relationship. Despite that, I went into a second toxic relationship; I had not healed my wounds and followed the same path I was following before. I believe that I went into that second unhealthy relationship due to the lack of help from a professional. I wasn't seeing a therapist; I had just gone to a workshop and kept working on it myself.
A year and a half ago, I started seeing a therapist, Juanita Herrera, who specializes in family constellations. While working on my emotional problems, I decided to do a gastric sleeve surgery. I found comfort in food when I felt sad or anxious, and was ready to change that. When I started losing weight, I felt better, more empowered, and less self-conscious. I could sleep better, exercise more, and do other things, which made me feel better about myself and value myself more. This process of loving myself helped me decide to get a divorce and work on living a healthier life mentally and physically.

En algún momento de mi vida, me encontraba en una situación horrible, estaba deprimida y en una relación muy tóxica, y tenía el autoestima muy baja. Además, en aquel momento tenía mucha ansiedad y padecía de obesidad.
Encontré al grupo de mujeres del Centro de Recursos para Mujeres aqui en Sarasota, alli me di cuenta de que me merecía algo mejor y dejé esa relación. A pesar de ello, entré en una segunda relación tóxica; no había curado mis heridas y seguí el mismo camino que antes. Creo que entré en esa segunda relación toxica debido a la falta de ayuda de un profesional. No acudía a un terapeuta; sólo había ido a un taller y seguía trabajando en mi solo por mi cuenta.
Hace un año y medio, empecé a ver a una terapeuta, Juanita Herrera, especializada en constelaciones familiares. Mientras trabajaba en mis problemas emocionales decidí hacerme la operacion de manga gástrica. Encontraba consuelo en la comida cuando me sentía triste o ansiosa, y estaba dispuesta a cambiar eso. Cuando empecé a perder peso, me sentí mejor, más fuerte y menos acomplejada. Podía dormir mejor, hacer más ejercicio y otras cosas que me hacían sentir mejor conmigo misma y valorarme más. Este proceso de quererme a mí misma me ayudó a decidir a divorciarme y a trabajar para llevar una vida más sana mentalmente y fisicamente.

While growing up, I always thought I had to be successful; I did everything possible to reach my goals. I was very talented in my sports, and I had a scholarship at a university. I had earned everything I had. It got to a point where I thought I was better than everyone else, even my college trainer. One day, I decided to do everything on my own. I left the university, lost my scholarship, and decided to go back home to practice athletics my way. I didn’t take long for me to realize that I was not an athlete anymore, which was very hard to accept. I had to work to earn a living and make time for school and sports. Life was overwhelming because, in my mind, I thought I was still a full-time athlete, or at least I still wanted to be one.

Mientras crecía, siempre pensé que tenía que tener éxito; hice todo lo posible por alcanzar mis metas. Tenía mucho talento en mis deportes y me dieron una beca en la universidad. Me había ganado todo lo que tenía. Llegué a un punto en el que pensaba que era mejor que los demás, incluso que mi entrenador, durante la universidad. Un día, decidí hacerlo todo por mi cuenta. Dejé la universidad, perdí mi beca y decidí volver a casa para practicar el atletismo a mi manera. Pero, ya no era atleta, lo cual fue muy difícil de aceptar. Tenía que trabajar para ganarme la vida y sacar tiempo para los estudios y el deporte. I didn’t know what to do with my life; I felt I was wasting my time. It wasn’t long before I realized I had crashed into life and my dreams. So, I started to party and do things that were not so healthy for me. The constant feeling of being a failure to my family overwhelmed me because I wasn’t who they wanted me to be, a successful athlete.
I became depressed, and my mother recommended speaking to a therapist, Juanita Herrera. After rejecting the suggestion, a couple of times, one day, I realized I was harming myself with the lifestyle I was living. I took her advice and saw Juanita, who specializes in family constellations. I then learned that being a successful athlete was not the only way to live a meaningful life. I didn’t have to be what they wanted me to be. I had to do things for myself and an ordinary life can be significant as well.

No sabía qué hacer con mi vida; No tardé en darme cuenta de que me había estrellado contra la vida y mis sueños. Sentía que estaba perdiendo el tiempo. Así que empecé a salir de fiesta y a hacer cosas que no eran muy saludables para mí. La constante sensación de ser un fracaso para mi familia me abrumaba porque no era lo que ellos querían que fuera, un atleta de éxitoso.
Me deprimí y mi madre me recomendó hablar con una terapeuta, Juanita Herrera. Después de rechazar la sugerencia un par de veces, un día me di cuenta de que me estaba haciendo daño con el estilo de vida que llevaba. When we are ignorant, we often try to find an outlet for our issues, which can be unhealthy, like drugs, alcohol, or depression, and withdrawing from the world outside us.
In the United States, we have more resources, and people are open-minded compared to Colombia.
On December 18th, 2009, the day of my son’s birthday, while I was getting my home ready for my husband to bring in the Christmas tree, I got a call on my cellphone. I had news that my daughter had a car accident. She was 18 years old and an athlete at the time. I couldn’t understand what was happening, I began to scream, and my husband took the call; once he heard what had happened, we ran to the hospital. Unfortunately, we didn’t know which hospital she had been taken to because they had to take her via helicopter. So, we began to call hospitals to see where she was at.
Once we arrived at the hospital in St. Pete, and they confirmed she was there, I didn’t know what to do. Suddenly, a priest came out to meet us, and I didn’t know what to think. The worst came to my mind, but he said, “What you will see is very difficult to process; the boy (their son) cannot come in. Let’s pray, so we have a miracle.” We went into the ICU, and she was on the hospital bed, with many cables attached to her body. She had one hand hanging from the edge of the bed, dripping blood. The image was horrible; I came out of there completely broken, and I felt like my knees could collapse anytime. Later, a doctor came out and told us she was in a coma, and we just had to wait; no one gave us hope. Then the neurologist told us that she had suffered brain damage, and her brain was very swollen. She had a 50% chance of surviving and 50% of dying. My husband and I decided to have faith and focus on that 50% of a positive outcome. We were devoted to God to give us a miracle.
She spent two weeks at the St. Pete hospital and was then translated into a rehabilitation center. I worked at a rehabilitation center in Sarasota and got her transferred to the hospital where I worked so I could be closer to her. I would sleep with her in her room during the week, and my husband would come in on weekends; we still had a son back home we needed to take care of.
Four months later, once she woke up from her coma, she had to learn to eat, talk, and walk, and she started from zero. It was a long journey, waiting for her to open her eyes, and recognize me. The day she opened her eyes, there was a huge celebration (figuratively), and from then on, when there was an improvement, we celebrated every single step she took forward. I would pray to God to give me back my daughter. I remember when she said her first word and said I was her mother; I was so happy.
When my daughter was able to go home with us, I became very anxious; whenever I heard a sound, I checked her to make sure she was breathing. I couldn’t sleep, so I would get up at midnight to smoke with my husband in the driveway. I remember one day, I was smoking outside and saw many snakes around me, but they weren’t there physically, it was all in my head; I was terrified. I think I had PTSD. I wouldn’t let my son do anything with his friends because I was so afraid he would get hurt. I didn’t want anyone else to care for my daughter because I thought they would do it wrong. I knew I had a problem.
One day, years ago, one of my co-workers told me about a seminar of the Angels here in Sarasota. I went so my friend would stop insisting for me to go. Once I attended the seminar, I realized that it really helped me and it was something that I needed. I learned to cope with all my fears due to my daughter’s accident, and I realized I needed to heal so much more than I thought. Unfortunately, they stopped doing it because of the pandemic. I needed to understand that my daughter wanted to be independent again. She went back to school and learned to drive again. She now has a normal, healthy life. She is married to a good man and is going to have her second child, I am very happy for her. My support group, my family, my son, my faith, and the group I joined helped me get through that challenging time.

Cuando somos ignorantes, a menudo intentamos encontrar una salida a nuestros problemas, que puede ser poco saludable, como las drogas, el alcohol o la depresión, y alejarnos de los demas.
En Estados Unidos, tenemos más recursos, y la gente es de mente abierta en comparación con Colombia.
El 18 de diciembre de 2009, el día del cumpleaños de mi hijo, mientras alistaba mi casa para que mi esposo trajera el árbol de Navidad, recibí una llamada en mi celular. Tenía noticias de que mi hija había tenido un accidente en el carro. En aquel momento tenía 18 años y era deportista. Yo no entendía lo que estaba pasando y empecé a gritar. Mi marido cogió la llamada, se enteró de lo que había pasado y corrimos al hospital. Por desgracia, no sabíamos a qué hospital la habían llevado porque tuvieron que trasladarla en helicóptero. Así que empezamos a llamar a los hospitales para ver dónde estaba.
Cuando llegamos al hospital de St. Pete y nos confirmaron que estaba allí, no supe qué hacer. De repente, un cura salió a recibirnos y no supe qué pensar. Me vino a la mente lo peor, pero él nos dijo: "Lo que van a ver es muy difícil de procesar; el niño (su hijo) no puede entrar. Recemos para que se produzca un milagro". Entramos en la UCI, y ella estaba en la cama del hospital, con muchos cables conectados a su cuerpo. Tenía una mano colgando del borde de la cama, chorreando sangre. La imagen era horrible; salí de allí completamente destrozada, y sentí que mis rodillas podían derrumbarse en cualquier momento. Más tarde salió un médico y nos dijo que ella estaba en coma, y que teníamos que esperar; nadie nos daba esperanzas. Entonces el neurólogo nos dijo que había sufrido daños cerebrales y que su cerebro estaba muy inflamado. Tenía un 50% de posibilidades de sobrevivir y un 50% de morir. Mi marido y yo decidimos tener fe y centrarnos en ese 50% de un resultado positivo. Nos encomendamos a Dios para que nos concediera un milagro.
Ella pasó dos semanas en el hospital de St. Pete y luego fue trasladada a un centro de rehabilitación. Yo trabajaba en un centro de rehabilitación en Sarasota y conseguí que la trasladaran al hospital donde yo trabajaba para poder estar más cerca de ella. Dormía con ella en su habitación durante la semana y mi marido venía los fines de semana; aún teníamos un hijo en casa del que teníamos que ocuparnos.
Cuatro meses después, cuando despertó del coma, tuvo que aprender a comer de nuevo, a hablar y a caminar, y empezó de cero. Fue un largo camino, esperando a que abriera los ojos, me viera y me reconociera. El día que abrió los ojos, hubo una gran celebración (en sentido figurativo), y a partir de entonces, cuando había una mejora, celebrábamos cada paso que daba hacia adelante. Yo le rezaba a Dios para que me devolviera a mi hija. Recuerdo cuando pronunció su primera palabra y dijo que yo era su madre; me sentí muy feliz.
Cuando mi hija pudo irse a casa con nosotros, me puse muy nerviosa; cada vez que oía un ruido, la miraba para asegurarme de que respiraba. No podía dormir, así que me levantaba a medianoche para fumar con mi marido en la entrada de la casa. Recuerdo que un día estaba fumando afuera y vi muchas serpientes a mi alrededor, pero no estaban allí físicamente, todo estaba en mi mente; estaba aterrorizada. Creo que tuve un trastorno de estrés postraumático. No dejaba que mi hijo hiciera nada con sus amigos porque tenía mucho miedo de que le pasara algo. No quería que nadie más cuidara de mi hija porque pensaba que lo harían mal. Yo sabía que yo tenía un problema.
Un día, hace años, una de mis compañeras de trabajo me habló de un seminario de los Ángeles aquí en Sarasota. Fui para que mi amiga dejara de insistir. Una vez que fui, me di cuenta de que realmente me ayudaba y era algo que necesitaba. Aprendí a sobrellevar todos mis miedos debido al accidente de mi hija, y me di cuenta de que necesitaba sanar mucho más de lo que pensaba. Por desgracia, dejaron de hacerlo a causa de la pandemia. Necesitaba entender que mi hija quería volver a ser independiente. Volvió a la escuela y aprendió a conducir de nuevo. Ella ahora tiene una vida normal y saludable. Está casada con un buen hombre y va a tener su segundo hijo, estoy muy feliz por ella. Mi grupo de apoyo, mi familia, mi hijo, mi fe y el grupo al que me uní me ayudaron a superar ese difícil momento.

I was a preschool teacher in Puerto Rico and I have always been interested in human behavior. For this reason, I completed a master's degree in the area of Psychology, a profession that has opened doors for me to help many people who are looking for ways to deal with the challenges that life brings them.
I believe that my experiences and knowledge serve as a tool for those Latinos(as) who wish to overcome emotional obstacles.
It has been my experience that culturally our population has a lot of resistance to talk about their emotions. Culturally, talking about emotions was seen as a symbol of weakness. As a counselor, I am interested in bringing a message of reflection to our Latino culture so that they understand how important it is to talk about emotions and how working on them could help them to have a fulfilling life.

Fui maestra de preescolar en Puerto Rico y siempre me intereso la conducta humana. Por tal razón, complete una maestría en el área de Psicología, profesión que me ha abierto las puertas para ayudar a muchas personas que buscan la manera de poder lidiar con los desafíos que la vida les trae.
Considero que mis vivencias, experiencias y conocimiento sirven como una herramienta de superación para aquellos latinos(as) que deseen superarse los obstáculos emocionales.

While growing up, there was a rule that the church was the solution to our mental health. I am agnostic, and I did not know what the answer was for me. I didn’t have anyone to talk to about my mental health. When I arrived in the USA, I had more conversations about it and went to a health center. My therapist and I would even talk about how I had too much homework and didn't know how to handle it, her help gave me a lot of peace of mind and I understood the benefit of having that resource.
Mental health was not a common topic spoken about at home. It was common to hear that to feel better about a particular situation, we needed to pray about it or go to church. Being agnostic, that was not an option for me. During the pandemic, I questioned what I could do to get through those difficult times while I stayed at home and we waited for the world to return to normal.

Mientras crecía, existía la norma de que la iglesia era la solución para nuestra salud mental. Yo soy agnóstica y no sabía cuál era la respuesta para mí. No tenía a nadie con quien hablar de mi salud mental. Cuando llegué a Estados Unidos, tuve más conversaciones al respecto y fui a un centro de salud. Mi terapeuta y yo hablábamos incluso de que tenía demasiados deberes y no sabía cómo manejarlos, su ayuda me daba mucha tranquilidad y me di cuenta del beneficio de tener ese recurso.
La salud mental no era un tema común del que se hablara en casa. Lo habitual era oír que para sentirnos mejor con una situación concreta teníamos que rezar o ir a la iglesia. Siendo agnóstica esa no era una opción para mí. Durante la pandemia, me preguntaba qué podía hacer para superar esos momentos difíciles mientras me quedaba en casa y esperábamos a que el mundo volviera a la normalidad.

When I had my mental health counselor after I arrived at college, I was overjoyed, but it wasn't enough because they didn't speak Spanish or comprehend my culture's dynamics. Then the pandemic came.
At the beginning of the pandemic, I had to move out of my university dorm very quickly; I became overwhelmed with the isolation, the stress, and the uncertainty of what was happening. I had to return to Colombia, and we didn’t know when we could return to the USA. My friends and I would talk about the issue, but we didn’t know what to do with our feelings. While in Colombia, I heard about a therapist who lived in the city I am from, Cartagena. I decided to try it out, and I realized that for therapy to really help me, they had to understand my culture and speak my primary language.

Cuando tuve mi consejera de salud mental después de llegar a la universidad. Me alegré mucho de tener esa oportunidad, pero no fue suficiente porque no hablaban español ni comprendían la dinámica de mi cultura. Entonces llegó la pandemia.
Al principio de la pandemia, tuve que mudarme rápidamente de mi residencia universitaria; me sentí abrumada por el aislamiento, el estrés y la incertidumbre de lo que estaba pasando. Tuve que regresar a Colombia, y no sabíamos cuándo podríamos volver a Estados Unidos. Mis amigos y yo hablábamos del tema, pero no sabíamos qué hacer con nuestros sentimientos. Estando en Colombia, oí hablar de una terapeuta que vivía en la ciudad de la que soy, Cartagena. Decidí intentarlo y me di cuenta de que, para que la terapia me ayudara de verdad, tenían que entender mi cultura y hablar mi lengua materna.

This body of work is an exploration of personal stories of local Hispanic individuals and their journey battling with Mental Health and Mental Health Care. Mental Health is highly stigmatized within the Hispanic community due to immigration, religion, and personal relationships. These photographs shed light on the struggles endured, and open up conversations about Mental Health and Mental Health Care both within and outside of the Hispanic community. It is important to have these conversations to better understand the Hispanic culture and their needs as part of this society.
