This project will take an aerial survey of mining activities in five different biomes in twelve Brazilian States.  I will extend the mining research and documentation that I have been doing since 2015 in my home state Minas Gerais, and create a unique, captivating visual essay made of imagery and words. The work will portray mining from an art perspective, combining pictures with information backed by extensive research and data analysis.

The collapse of two tailing mines brought Brazilian mining to the media attention. But what hides behind the tragedy is a deeper rotted issue: illegal mining, fulled by the current political system, is fast corroding Brazilian sacred wilderness. Not only by triggering natural disasters but also silently annihilating ecosystems and ancient cultures liked to it.

Brazilian mountainous terrain and forests keep a wide array of minerals and around 25% of the world’s iron.  Mining activities, perpetuated since the early 1700s, are so deeply rooted in Brazilian culture and economy that have hardly ever been questioned. It is estimated that more than 5 million people in the country suffer some negative impact caused by mining activities: lack of water,  air pollution, deforestation, semi-slavery employment, high levels of child prostitution and deep social inequality, are just some of the negative externalities.

The project transverses art, conceptual documentary, research, and education, bringing solid and verified information about each mine and region photographed. The goal is to make the viewer question their connection to mining: we are all consumers of a complex production chain that feeds mining.

We have a decade to milden climate change - and I will devote my lifetime to create measurements and actions to go against it.
During the mentorship, I would like to enhance my capacity of producing a positive impact, I need to strengthen my action. With the mentorship I wish to get support to enhance my investigative work. Furthermore, the outreach support. As an emerging storyteller, I often find many obstacles to bring to attention stories that have a worldwide impact. Visura offers an invaluable support to lead visual conversations around social issues and help me ma

Additionally, my relationship to the communities has become such an important part of my life that it has been challenging to properly visually represent them. It would be excellent to have mentoring and guidance to properly overcome those visual challenges and doubts.
I am flexible and available to work in person in the US from February to May 2020 in person, remotely during the Summer, and again in person from September to December.
