Private Story
Mineral Veins | Transitory Landscapes for Visura Guild
The collapse of two tailing mines brought Brazilian mining to the media attention. But what hides behind the tragedy is a deeper rotted issue: illegal mining, fulled by the current political system, is fast corroding Brazilian sacred wilderness. Not only by triggering natural disasters but also silently annihilating ecosystems and ancient cultures liked to it.
Brazilian mountainous terrain and forests keep a wide array of minerals and around 25% of the world’s iron. Mining activities, perpetuated since the early 1700s, are so deeply rooted in Brazilian culture and economy that have hardly ever been questioned. It is estimated that more than 5 million people in the country suffer some negative impact caused by mining activities: lack of water, air pollution, deforestation, semi-slavery employment, high levels of child prostitution and deep social inequality, are just some of the negative externalities.
The project transverses art, conceptual documentary, research, and education, bringing solid and verified information about each mine and region photographed. The goal is to make the viewer question their connection to mining: we are all consumers of a complex production chain that feeds mining.
