During the final year of my U.S. Naval enlistment in 2015, I went on my first and only deployment aboard the USS Stennis aircraft carriers out of San Diego CA.  While my rating and responsibilities were based in avionics, I managed during my off hours to wander around and photograph daily ship life during my time aboard.  I found that having a camera on my person allowed me access to different work centers and people on the ship who likely assumed I was a Mass Communications Specialist (MC) taking photos for Navy Times or other military media.  I never lied about my rating, but never bothered to correct anyone either.  While the work is a few years old now, it marked my first exploration of documentary photography which would later become my primary focus and interest in image-making and storytelling.  Two months after the deployment ended, my Navy contract ended and I began a Master's program at The School of Visual Arts MFA Photo, Video, and Related Media program. I applied using images from this early body of work which I still cherish from my time at sea.
