COSMOS COVE- It's 4:30 a.m. and the wake-up alarm screams. There's no escape. There's barely enough room to roll over. Lia Heifetz, Matthew Kern and Clayton Hamilton stumble to their feet in the dank belly of the F/V Dial West.

"Kelp has always been a guaranteed catch for us when the fish weren't biting," laughs Heifetz.
Thank you to Barnacle Foods for inviting me on one of your first wild kelp harvests for this story. In particular, thank you to friend and inspiration Lia Heifetz for her dedication to and passion for food security, ethical business practices, and supporting her hometown with everything she does.
All the kinks weren't ironed out on this trip, but it made for many laughs and lots of pickles.
