June 2, 2017. We had a couple cousins staying with us at the start of summer break and so when they woke up for the day, and remembered that each other was there, it was out the door to play in pajamas and underwear. USA

April 3, 2021. Typically the chickens we raise for meat each spring eat and sleep and don't care much for us people. This bird was different, it followed us around and my daughter developed a relationship with it, enough to name it Snowball and hang out in the coop with it frequently. Our guardian dog Joe was jealous of the attention the chicken was getting and came over to visit with my daughter through the coop fence. USA

July 2, 2021. My daughter watches our two kittens play (we call it 'Kitten TV') on the front porch on a lazy summer morning here in the Ozarks of Arkansas. This was the summer that both her and her younger brother were allowed to each pick out a kitten, and they quickly became our family's greatest source of entertainment. The warmth of the morning light and knowing that this is how we spent our mornings this summer is what brings me joy from this photo. usa

August 4, 2021. My daughter swims in the waters of Buffalo National River in the Tyler Bend section near St. Joe, Arkansas. When you grow up in the hills surrounding the Buffalo River, spending your summer days playing in it's waters is what kids around here know. 'River time' as we call it around here, with no schedule, just enjoying the sun, water and each other make my heart happy. Silver Hill USA

January 26, 2022. Our family was burning the woods around our home here in the Ozarks of Arkansas, in order to have protection in case of a wildfire. My daughter saw her cat so she snatched her up, worried that she may walk into the area of the fire. USA

Summary

Documentary images of my children while living our life in the wooded hills of the Arkansas Ozarks.

Documenting my family's life here on a wooded hilltop in the Ozarks of Arkansas has helped me to slow down and savor many of the small moments that I may have otherwise missed. It's inspired me to start a larger project called 'Growing Up Ozarks' where I've also photographed other families in our community alongside my own, in hopes of building a bridge for understanding what it's like to grow up in this portion of rural America through the eyes of a mother raising her children here.
