It is Spring in the Northern Hemisphere, and here in the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. the flowers have been emerging forth. I love this time of year for the explosion of color, the boldness of new life, and freshness in the air. Emerging is a theme I work with when making portraits of the botanical world. Emerging from the past, from concealment into wholeness, clarity, sovereignty, infinite possibilities and so on. Yesterday I took myself to the National Arboretum in Washington, DC to visit the Camellias on Hickey Hill, part of the Asian collection. I am drawn to their beauty, color and inherent feminine energy. C. Japonica seen at the U.S. National Arboretum in Washington, DC, April 16, 2022. © Carla Cioffi
