This ongoing project is done in conjunction with Dr. Lorraine Venturato of the University of Calgary.

How might we understand aging and identity, and concepts of home, place, and community for older adults living in diverse settings?

1) Explore the link between aging, well-being, and identity, alongside concepts of home, place, and community;
2) Enhance understanding of the lives of older adults across diverse contexts;
3) Explore the intersection of embodied and emplaced conceptualizations of aging as it plays out in the lives, experiences, homes, and communities of older adults; and
4) Highlight the heterogeneity of older adults’ lives across diverse settings, make visible the often-invisible lives of older adults, and give voice to what matters most to them.

The images a paired together. The first image is the portrait of the subject presenting themselves how they wanted to be seen. The second image is of their bedroom/living space, showing the different life experiences and context in the shelves and on the desks. The images are meant to show individuality and agency of a demographic that is easily generalized and marginalized. Secondarily, they are meant to create a bridge between academic research and general public engagement on the issues of aging in our society.
