As 2020 comes to an end, we recognize 30 professional visual storytellers worldwide, who put their own well-being at risk to document and inform the world around us with their unique voices and perspectives.  From a global pandemic to lockdowns, environmental disasters, elections, police brutality, and more—these images shed light on some of the events that shaped this year, and the impact these events had on our lives.

Australian bushfires. The social outcry over the many reckless killings of people of color in America. Cyclone Amphan’s landfall in eastern India and Bangladesh. Floods all around the world from China, to India, to Somalia. The global fight against police brutality from the United States to Uganda and Nigeria. Tensions in Iran. An attack in central Vienna. The US Presidential election. A massive explosion at a Beirut port. The global COVID-19 pandemic.

Although we have only touched the surface, it is safe to say 2020 has made a mark on the world. And many of us are hoping to see the end of the dark tunnel as the year ends.

To visualize this year in photos means to continue to acknowledge this year’s significant impact, the good and bad, on each and every one of our lives in one way or another. It is hard not to walk into 2021 with fear and question. It may seem easy to feel ominous. I have many times felt a sense of rage and discouragement in my country, as many have felt in theirs. But I challenge all of us to believe next year will provide heartening news and energy. I challenge moments of reflection, in order to feel restoration around the globe. I encourage a moment to appreciate the dedication put into recording history each year, no matter how bad it gets. The stories must go on. Capturing this year, allows that reflection. So thank you to all Visura visual storytellers, for your diligence.

This is the first part of a series of features highlighting this year's work and the accomplishments of some of the professional visual storytellers and journalists around the world, who are part of the Visura community.
