In fall of 2009, I received an unexpected, though very fortunate opportunity to travel to Belize.  The trip taught me the value of illumination. An exponential gift beyond measure lies in the experience of seeing for the first time, as in our newborn states of being.  Equally powerful are the moments that come into our lives that push us to evolve, to alter our perspectives, to see with renewed eyes and refreshed mind. Walking through the streets of Belize City, Belize I watched with wide eyes, open heart, and flared spirit.  Though a momentary visitor from North America, I was overcome with profound emotion and thought that was matched by my desire to share. This documentary photography project, entitled Sights of Belize City, spawned out of the interactions I experienced during my short time in the port town. I met and talked with the people there. I listened to many of them as they asked me for money or spontaneously shared their stories of life. A necessary component, my camera transfigured to a vessel of communication. It became evident to me that when you give people an opportunity to share their stories, the lives of the storytellers and listeners are proportionately impacted. At times, I found that a simple stare or willingness to be photographed spoke volumes.

This sharing of stories provides opportunities for us to be cognizant of the ways that we easily perpetuate division and misunderstanding from those that are different. Photography and other forms of visual storytelling allow us to see that this division is a disadvantageous and dangerous illusion. Difference is the very site where we begin to more fully see the ways we are all connected. Sights of Belize City is located at the heart of this understanding. It is my hope that these photographs will help viewers to become more conscious of the ways that we impact others, just as others impact us. This consciousness is the juncture point to comprehend the interconnectivity of human existence and to see that our experiences are co-determinant of one another. By honoring difference, we create a foundation to forge recognition of ourselves in relation to those who are seemingly outside of us. This photography series aims to inspire a deeper insight and understanding of the human spirit and plight.  The printing and display of the photographs taken in Belize City, Belize remind us of the importance in taking ownership of the shifting of our perspectives, in order to readily see the world more clearly and holistically.
