"The tortuous journey" is a story about the migratory journey of hundreds of families; from his passage through the Darien jungle in Colombia, until their arrival at the border between Mexico and the United States. The reportage wants to show from an intimate perspective the physical vulnerability and emotional fragility that they face during their journey (around four thousand kilometers away), and the dangers and challenges they are exposed to passing through jungles, rivers, deserts and cities; as well as the long chain of corruption in the countries they have to cross in search of the "American dream".
During the last two months, I have accompanied families like Los Peña, migrants of Venezuelan origin, in different moments and countries. Venezuelan people, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), represent the second largest population of cross-border displaced persons in the world in the last decade. I have travelled with them for a large part of their journey, passing through alternative roads that try to evade the different migratory filters until their arrival to the United States.
The reportage take into account people and the importance of their relationships to continue forward despite adversities; It also documents two of the most dangerous migratory routes in the world: The “Darién Gap”, the unaccessible jungle between Colombia and Panama, and the train that cross Mexico in a very heavy conditions known as “The Beast”. In the first half of 2023, around 250,000 people realized this journey, an increasing figure that it’s five times more than the previous year, and represents, according according to the IOM, the largest record of people in transit in the Western Hemisphere in the whole story. These stories are the vivid witness of migrants that put their lives at risk for the dream to "find a better future”.
